We had the good fortune of connecting with Christina Dober and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christina, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
This will sound crazy, but I really didn’t have much thought process when I started my business.
I had been practicing yoga for over 15 years and people kept telling me, “You should be a yoga teacher!” That scared me to death because I had the worst fear of public speaking, let alone public teaching!
When I was 34, one of my dear friends suddenly passed away and that sent me on a soul searching journey. I ended up going to a yoga retreat with my husband (who had initially wanted to go pub hopping in Ireland) and while I was there, hesitantly asked the retreat leader what she thought about me signing up for yoga teacher training. Thankfully, she was so encouraging and supportive.
The second I decided to sign up for yoga teacher training, it was like some divine force started driving me to do things I never would have dreamed of in the past.
We built a gorgeous yoga deck in our backyard before I even finished my teacher training and I went through the process to create an llc (even though I had no idea what I was doing).
I had never had any entrepreneurial experience before or any idea of how to market or anything honestly. I barely knew how to teach yoga! However, thankfully, I did know how to meditate and receive messages. So everyday, I would meditate and ask for a message and I would follow through however small the action was. It varied from “build an email list,” to “send a text to ___” to “offer a class on Saturday mornings.”
I just kept following my intuition every step of the way and it led me to hiring a business coach and pivoting my whole business and business name to hosting soul retreats.
It was such a magical process and I’m so happy that I had no idea what I was doing!!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love what I do and I think it’s pretty unique. I help people remember their energetic and spiritual being through coaching, Himalayan breathwork and kundalini, yoga, Reiki, and Vedic Astrology.
When I first started out, the plan is my head was to be a yoga teacher in a studio and to give Reiki when people needed it. Almost immediately, that felt unaligned. I was confused and frustrated because in my head, I had been so set on it.
Turns out there was a bigger yearning in my heart. I noticed many of my clients felt confused about their lives and wanted guidance and I felt a longing to take them on a journey back to their soul selves and to help them heal trauma. I had no idea what that would look like as a business, but I just kept following my intuition, building little workshops and lessons to help people with their lives and open their hearts, and getting more education myself.
I started seeing how all the modalities I practice come together to create a beautiful healing experience. The healing is remembering who your soul self is and then learning to shine from your authentic soul self.
I started building longer courses and healing certifications and eventually started hosting soul retreats. I had to do a lot of experimentation because I constantly have ideas of how to share wisdom and healing with people. Some of my ideas work out better than others, but they all just helped me refine and focus on what I really excel at!
The lesson I would share is that you don’t always need to know what the end result will look like, in fact there may not be an “end result.” Amazon started as an online bookstore! Just be consistent, take a step each day, and make sure you listen to your intuition!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Los Angeles, right by LAX. We’d probably spend the first day just chilling and catching up, maybe head to the beach. I’d take her to Bacari PDR because it’s delicious. Over the next few days, we would probably go to Venice, a cool museum, take some yoga classes, dance classes, aerial hammock classes, pottery classes. There are so many cool classes here in LA! I’d take her to one of the Korean Spas here, I love Olympic Spa, and one of the cool bookstores in Downtown LA and also one of the rooftop bars in LA. Most of all, I’d make sure we had plenty of time for naps and relaxing.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I was charging $25 for a private class, I was still working at a separate corporate job full time. I positive there was no way I could ever make a living off my business.
Thankfully, one of my clients, happened to take an interest in helping me and happened to be a business coach! I didn’t even know there was such thing as business coaches at the time. He opened my eyes to the possibilities for my business and helped me realize that my business could actually be profitable.
Thank you so much to Julien Roy!!
