We had the good fortune of connecting with Christine Galetto and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christine, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
Working with my hands, flexing my creativity, but above all, bringing people joy.

I started Casual Magic because I was looking for a creative outlet – I wanted to get out of my head and just create. But over the years, it’s become so much more than that. I want people to feel something when they open up their purchase from Casual Magic. I want them to feel something every time they pass that shelf holding my ring dish or walk by their new wall hanging – I want to bring them joy. Helping to bring a little bit of joy into this world, into someone’s life and home, that makes me happy.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Casual Magic started as a hobby, a creative outlet, and grew into a “side hustle” (even though I hate that terminology). And it continues to be something I do on the side of my “9-to-5” job in Public Relations. The hardest part continues to be finding balance between it all.

I create everything in small batches – each piece is shaped, marbleized, dyed, strung by my hands – no two items are exactly alike, which is what I love most about them. After buying one of my Shibori tea towels, one customer remarked that my dye work is “beautiful in a wild sort of way” and I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Reflecting back on the last few years since I started Casual Magic, I’m proud of growing something from nothing – rediscovering my creative side.

I primarily dye with indigo right now – the unique blue color speaks to me on a deep level. Indigo is actually associated with mystical powers, intuition and the higher mind. The color often signals integrity, sincerity, devotion, wisdom and justice – all such important values today and always.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them out of the city, actually! I live in Long Beach and before COVID, had my visitor agenda down to a science but now it’s more focused on enjoying the outdoors, one of the main reasons we live in this beautiful place. I love to take friends to the beach down in the OC, take them for a bike ride on the beach path here in Long Beach, grab a slice of pizza from Little Coyote (best pizza in town), then catch the sunset over at Bluff Park.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to my mom – I’m endlessly inspired by her. From my earliest memories, she’s always been my biggest champion. Her love and support has given me the room and courage to step outside my comfort zone and take risks throughout my life, including starting my own business.
