We had the good fortune of connecting with Cindy Leon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cindy, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success in my brand, in my opinion, is staying true to myself and what I find personally appealing. My placement style from the beginning has been the same, with of course a few up grades I’ve learned along the way with tools, cutting methods etc. but the aesthetic has always remained true to me. Bright, fun, and vibrant. I feel like when you piggyback off of someone else’s aesthetic, it shows.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Two years ago I started my Instagram for Beautiful Boards not knowing where it would go. My first weekend of sales was 4th of July weekend. I was slammed with what I thought was “a lot of orders” I was seriously in over my head with no previous experience in sales, no friends in the community, and very little knowledge of where to buy what! Luckily Eric and I managed to get all orders out the door And we were like “what did we just get ourselves into!?” Luckily as time went on I figured out how to price things correctly, I made friends in my work community that helped guide me, my technique began to improve and most importantly my orders began to be consistent. I did a lot of research and spent a lot of time on google trying to figure out where I can source for cheap where my prices can be reasonable with also making a profit. I had a bin full of boxes and boards that didn’t work out and that was ok because I was learning. So much money went into research and development until about a year after I opened my business was when I settled on packaging, logo, Stickers and ribbon. Everything about my brand is me. I put in hours, time, and money to make it to where I am today. The first year was the hardest. Managing work with family was extremely difficult because I worked from my phone/Instagram. Once I learned to separate the two I felt like I gained my sanity back. Something I learned along the way is people will always want the easy way out, don’t be that person! I can’t stress enough how important it is to do your own research and see your outcome. It’s so rewarding!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes to my partner in everything, Eric Medrano. Without his support I wouldn’t be where I was today with Beautiful Boards (literally). Pre pandemic I was struggling at my job feeling miserable every day. He’s the one who said “just quit, do this full time. I’ll help you!” And I did. It was the easiest and best decision I’ve ever made, thanks to him!
