We had the good fortune of connecting with Claire Sundbye and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Claire, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
How much social media has evolved the world of standup. In every aspect; from what comedians are doing on stage, to the audiences its bringing in, to how comedians are getting booked. It can be an amazing thing just as much as it can be a very bad thing.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was always an actor growing up. I moved to Chicago from Kansas in 2016 to go to a theater conservatory! Since graduating, I found my way into Standup comedy. I absolutely love it; I love the independence you have. Every night is something new! I have so much respect for actors, but with acting there was always something missing for me. Once I found standup, it made sense. I love this feeling of risk and freedom you get everytime you go onstage -I can say whatever I want, however I want it. Standup is like the ultimate playground!
Most of my material is anecdotal stuff about growing up in Kansas, being gay, my annoying older siblings. It’s one of the coolest things ever to take a topic that makes me uncomfortable, and turn it into something that people can laugh about together.
I once had a theater teacher get mad at me for what she reffered to as, “masking with humor”. At the time I said nothing, but in hindsight I don’t agree with her at all. People cope and communicate differently. Life can be unnecesarily shitty a lot of the time. Taking scary stuff that feels unaproachable, and turning it into something light and humorous that people can connect with, is a very powerful and very human thing.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend visiting Chicago, I would take them to Dante’s in Ukranian Village for the best pizza and beer! Then, to Laugh Factory for Chicago’s best standup. After that, we’d hit up Emporium to play some games, probably drink more beer. Checking out Andersonville is always a must. We will NOT be doing any of the regular tourist stuff. Well, maybe the Shedd Aquarium.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Laugh Factory Chicago is a club that’s given me so many opportunities. Sometimes I still can’t believe I get to perform there, it’s a magical place, and I never want to take being on that stage for granted!!

All of the staff members there are so supportive and welcoming to comedians at all levels.
The managers, Curtis Shaw Flagg and Maddy Fischer, have been integral to helping me grow my confidence and voice as a comedian. I honestly could go on forever saying positive things about them both; not only as managers but as people.

If you’re ever in Chicago, you’ve gotta stop by Laugh Factory!
