We had the good fortune of connecting with claris sayadian-dodge and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi claris, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I launched studioexpresso and C Artists in 2000 after I left Ocean Way studios (managed the facility’s 7 studios for 12 years). The idea was to assemble choice producers I knew and make them available to growing ranks of independent artists (both major and new) who seek development services. Labels were becoming more of a distribution and marketing centers rather than place to nurture artists. Era was marked by online services being launched including Spotify, YouTube, Apple, Amazon… Quickly we amassed about 100 producers who could be found with a simple Google search, some with their own private studios! Twenty years later, we’re here for artists. Our monthly eZine reaches 25,000 industry subscribers and Grammy voters – artists, session musicians, labels, managers, music supervisors and media. http://www.studioexpresso.com/

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Like energy chooses the path of least resistance, I’ve chosen to support musicians and music. Music is truly the international language that brings people together and anchors you to a favorite time or place. Musicians are truth seekers and fun to be with. My professional life has been series of choices based on my gut feeling. I didn’t become the president of Warner Brothers (my goal in college), however i get to manage a choice and award-winning family of artists I’m very proud to call my friends. My brand is respect and trust. I don’t sign contracts with my clients. We choose to work professionally together because it helps our careers and we simply want to. As far as challenges, covid has been a major one. It has forced us to rethink how we do things, adapt, prioritize and value people we love.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Lately i’ve been preparing al-fresco lunches for my close friends at home! Getting good at making an awesome ratatouille w poached salmon! Also fun to take friends to Japanese Friendship Garden off of Woodman in lake Balboa, close to home or go hiking at Tree People off of Mulholland Dr/Coldwater Canyon. For out-of-towners I like to take them downtown LA’s stunning Spire 73, America’s Tallest Open-Air Bar. The cocktail lounge offers unparalleled views of Los Angeles!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Wow, Thanksgiving is the perfect time to remember people who make a difference in your life. I truly stand on the shoulders of many mentors — beginning my own mom and husband who gave me the freedom to do what i love. Then Mark “Mooka” Rennick (Prairie Sun Studios) who trusted me with my first studio job! Producer Matt Wallace (Faith No More, Maroon 5) who cheered me on when I moved to LA from Norther Cali. I also thank my lucky stars to have known the following: Dan Alexander of DA Audio (he recommended me to Ocean Way), Jay Kaufman and Allen Sides (hired me there), Peter Maurer (trusted me to manage his staff at his studio design firm, bau;ton). Producers/Engineers Rafa Sardina (Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder), Ken Allardyce (Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls), Andre Fischer (Natalie Cole, Chaka Khan), Brent Fischer (Prince, D’Angelo), first clients and best friends. Also, here’s a shout out to my dear friends David Schwartz (Mix Magazine Founder, NAMM advisor, wine maker…), Brad Lunde aka Q (Bond) of Trans Audio Group who has been a great supporter of my geniuses for the last 10 years. Favorite book: Creative Quest by Questlove!
