We had the good fortune of connecting with Clarissa Gastelum and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Clarissa, how does your business help the community?
New Palm Collection is a fashion brand that gives back to foster kids in the Inland Empire and surrounding counties. Since the launch in 2017, New Palm has given back to over 1,000 foster kids. We have annual Christmas toy drives and have donated back to school items, clothes, toys and gifts to current and emancipated foster youth in need. We have brought the community together to hand-make over 300 blankets for foster youth and hosted a Fostercare awareness dinner this June in celebration of foster care awareness month which is every May. Our goal is to bring awareness to the needs of local foster youth and to connect foster youth to local organizations.Together, with local churches and organizations, New Palm is meeting the needs of foster kids in our community.
What should our readers know about your business?
My goal as an entrepreneur is to create spaces for growth, creativity and community. Whether it be philanthropic events for foster youth through my clothing brand New Palm Collection or hosting events and pop ups in our studio where small business owners can sell their items and connect with their clients. Building relationships where we can all win and make money is what I am most proud of. I believe I am where I am today because I always checked the posture of my heart and intentions. Like most people, life has not been easy, I’ve been hurt, betrayed and have gone through things that could’ve hardened my heart, that could’ve made me lose hope or want to “throw in the towel”. But, I was determined that no matter how hard things could get I wouldn’t give up. Life is all about decisions. I decided a long time ago, that I wanted to see all the visions and dreams in my mind out in the world. I don’t want to die and say, “what if?” I want to be able to say, “I did that.” I want the world to know that, it’s never too late to follow your dreams. You get this one life don’t live it fearfully, don’t live it with regrets. I became a full time entrepreneur two years ago, in my mid-thirties and it has been the most exciting and rewarding time of my life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my bestie was in town we’d definitely start out in Downtown Pomona as, I’d want her to check out my studio Limitless Studios and get her makeup and photos done by my business partner Celina Ochoa. Then I’d introduce her to our cool neighbors who own Leaf Enlight the coolest plant store and buy my favorite cactus incense. From there we’d walk down to Wish You Were Here coffee for a Oaxacan mocha. Once we’re cute and caffeinated we’d head to LA for dinner at Bottega Louie and order my favorite, the Tartufo Pizza, thank me later it’s so bomb. The beach is always a vibe, one of my favorite beaches is Laguna Beach. If you’re looking for a cute affordable restaurant Le Jardin gives you all the LA vibes. If rooftop is your vibe Perch is always a classic spot. Shopping is a must and flea markets are bomb Melrose trading post or Rose Bowl are my suggestions.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would first like to acknowledge my closest friend and the creator of my existence, God. Without Him I am nothing, everything I am and do flows from Him. I want to thank every single person who has ever bought something from my store, donated to a foster child through our events, supported events held at our studio Limitless Studios in Downtown Pomona. Entrepreneurship is not possible without the love and support of others so, thank you to anyone who has ever supported anything I have done. I am also, so grateful for my mother Josi who always encouraged me to go after everything I wanted in life and my pastor Aaron Levy who has shown me what true servant leadership is. Shoutout to my business partner Celina for jumping into this new adventure of co-ownership with me. The future is limitless!
