We had the good fortune of connecting with Corein Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Corein, how do you think about risk?
When it comes to risk taking, i like to think of myself as the ultimate risk taker. If it feels right in my soul and in alignment with what my true purpose is, i’m willing to put it all on the line in order to achieve the desired outcome that i seek. To me there’s no such thing as a lose, there are only lessons to be learned and opportunities to be seized. No matter which way you choose to look at it, it’s all apart of the journey that helps us grow into our best selves. As far as what part risk taking has played in my life/career it’s certainly an integral part. I have a philosophy that i use and its “Always Bet On Self”. That philosophy has allowed me to focus on what is right in front me by taking a chance and not focusing so much on the outcome but on how i can prevail in the present moment. In doing so i’ve been able to land opportunities that i used to dream of, that are now my reality.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a multimedia journalists with work in outlets such as Forbes x For(bes) The Culture, Instyle, Allure, Sheen Magazine & more. I have always had a passion for beauty and self-care which has led me to start my own preventive skincare line, Uni Blends Co. My line focuses on target problems such as anti-aging, hyperpigmentation, acne, and dark spots. Our goal is to help women of all skin tones achieve a desired goal they can confidently embrace, no filters involved.

I got to where i am today professionally by my determination to shine light on the positivity going on in the black and brown community. We have enough trash media spreading a narrative of who we are as a people and i wanted to do the exact opposite of that. I set out to create a cool and informative lane for all of the amazing things we are doing as people of color and i didnt stop until i made my way to audiences that had a wide reach. It wasn’t a hard road but i will say until i really honed on my specific niche i wasn’t able to break into the media industry like i desired. I believe in part it was due to timing and also knowing what story it was that i wanted to truly tell.

Some of the lessons i learned along the way are definitely to remain true to who you are and the unique style and gift that you are given. You will never be able to compare your career, your success, or your journey to anyone else. I would say remain resilient in what you stand for and never waiver from that. That’s when you will see people open up to what you have to offer, in whatever industry it is that you are wishing to make an impact in.

My brand story is all about authenticity and inclusion, rather thats in my writing career or my beauty brand. I feel as though, far too many people aren’t getting a chance to be celebrated because of what society may deem worthy or not. My job as a journalist and a beauty leader is to shine light on the underdog and give people a voice that may feel like their work goes unnoticed or that they aren’t good enough. I want to make people feel not only represented but appreciated in whatever stage they are in the journey of life.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to For(bes) The Culture, Being apart of the group has not only allotted me the opportunity to connect and fellowship with some amazing people but it’s made room for the opportunity to write for one of my dream publications, telling the stories of people who look like me. When it comes to mentorship i want to give a shoutout to David Wongk, Robyn-Melissa Watkins, and Jonatan Funtowicz with their knowledge, help and guidance I’m making another dream of mine come true with my skincare line Uni Blends Co. I want to shoutout all the people who may have doubts about a certain life circumstance, nothing is permanent take the lessons and roll with it knowing that life has so much more in store for you then you can even imagine, you just have to believe. Know that life is exactly what you make it. It’s starts with your mindset never let anyone tell you your dream is too big, they are wrong.
