Meet Courtney Abbiati | Co-founder of The Urban + The Mystic

We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Abbiati and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, how do you think about risk?
I think about risk from an emotional standpoint. To me a risk is never based off of “this is hard to achieve” or “this is going to cost a lot of money”, I look at risk from the standpoint of what will it cost my soul if I don’t do this? If not doing what I want to do means that in some way I’m not expressing myself or I’m sensoring myself, to me that risk is far greater than putting it all out there and doing what will make me happy. At the end of the day I know it always costs more to not follow your heart than a bad investment ever could.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My company is The Urban + The Mystic. We’ve created a line of products that are beautiful, lasting, able to be personalized and most importantly give you all the feels. I believe the magic sauce at U+M is that every product is a gesture, an expression of love, connection, healing and even celebration. Whether you’re gifting something from U+M to someone you love or even to yourself, every product offers you an opportunity to feel. I believe Maya Angelou said it best “At the end of the day people won’t remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel”, and I know for a fact that’s what we at The Urban + The Mystic, make you feel all the good stuff. We got to where we are today by an unspeakable amount of hard work, loyal clients, thinking outside the box and did we mention hard work? In the beginning days of U+M I would wake up with maybe one email to return and after that one email was returned I would put my nose to the grindstone to how I could wake up to twenty emails and if you rinse and repeat and have a good idea, eventually your inbox will fill up.
Some of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way is to never take no for an answer, in the beginning say yes to everything and while you always need to stay in line with your brand’s ethos you must remain open and malleable enough to grow.
What I want the world to know about The Urban + The Mystic is that we are the home of the good gesture, we help you solute someone’s success, reach a hand out to help them heal, cheer them on as they cross the finish line; we’re here to help you connect to the world around you and more deeply to yourself. It’s in these little gestures that those connections are made, that the sparks begin to fly, before you know a fire is lit to help light your way and warm your soul and once the fire lives on in your it’s only a matter of time before you light the way for someone else and isn’t that what’s it’s all about? In the great words of Ram Dass, “We’re all just walking each other home.” U+M is just here to help you on your journey and light the way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would start the day by walking the streets of Laurel Canyon, not only is this the birth place of U+M, but there is truly magic in the streets of Laurel Canyon. I describe it to everyone as an ice burg, you’ve only seen 25% of it and trust and believe that lower 75% is incredible. Next we are off to Hugo’s for the most delicious organic breakfast in the city. Then, because we have to do one thing that edifies us we will spring by The Getty on our way to the Malibu Country Mart for some shopping at lunch at Nobu. On our way back to Laurel Canyon we’ll stop by Med Men because obviously, then hit up Dry Bar on Sunset for a blowout and home to change for dinner at Chateau Marmont and after dinner drinks at The Nice Guy.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We would love to dedicate our Shoutout to all of our clients that have been with us since day one. When you’re introducing a new product to the marketplace it’s not a guarantee that people will understand and/or vibe with what you’re doing. Every single one of our clients have not been so utterly loyal, but they have helped us spread the love and get our brand message out there from coast to coast. We are incredibly grateful for them as we would truly not be here today talking to you if it wasn’t for these souls that just got it and bet on us.
