We had the good fortune of connecting with Crystal E. Green and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Crystal E., why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I really believe that, from the very beginning, my career pursued me. I had spent nearly twenty years trying to find my passion. Trying to find myself. Assessing my interests, feeling lost and trying to figure out what I wanted to be, long after I had grown up. But I never looked at the obvious thing that had been with me all my life. I had always been a storyteller and I discounted that because I took it for granted. But that was my true gift. And once I entertained the idea that I just might be an artist, I couldn’t wrap my head around any other career path. That gift had been with me all of my life; I just needed to open it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My good friend, Tami, recently encouraged me by saying “keep painting pictures with your words.” And no single statement has ever resonated with me more. For me, the genre or format never matter because when I sit down to tell a story, my goal is to tell a tale so vivid, the mind can’t help but see it. I hope this is what sets me apart from others. The ability to fluidly cross genres and still deliver a memorable experience. I’m most proud of my new book, Lavender Lily. The work is a raw reflection of who I am as both a writer and a human being and I’m incredibly excited to share it.

My journey is far from over but I’ve gotten to where I am by never giving up on myself, by refusing to settle for anything, by being willing to learn and to be taught and by not being afraid to pivot. My path hasn’t been easy and I’ve had my fair share of challenges. But my biggest lesson has been to trust that what I’ve asked for is coming. That doesn’t usually look like I picture it will but reminding myself that the fruition of big dreams requires big changes, makes me more open to and receptive of the chaos that sometimes surrounds me. In other words, when you’ve asked for the world, storms and natural disasters are inevitable.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a homebody but I really enjoy good food and spending time in beautiful local places that make you feel like you’ve traveled far. So, I think the itinerary would be simple. When not spending time at home cooking and catching up, we would have breakfast at Waffle Love in Long Beach, lunch at OrVeganic in Lawndale and Dinner at Grand Fish Tacos and Ceviche in Gardena or Slurpin’ Ramen Bar in LA. We’d cruise through picturesque Palos Verdes, take a stroll through Pasadena and ride electric scooters around the Marina. I think that’s it.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family – my supportive husband, Marvin and our children.
