We had the good fortune of connecting with Crystina Bond and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Crystina, how do you think about risk?
I think of risk as being very necessary when it comes to art making. It brings new innovative ideas to life! This keeps art interesting, we have to break the rules every once in a while. For me, risk have played a huge part in where I’m at today. Growing up in little ol’ Delaware I knew I wanted to explore more of what the world has to offer. When I was in school I took the risk of studying fashion styling abroad in Hong Kong by myself. Man did I learn so much! Then I picked up my things and moved to LA. I took a risk that I thought would be best for my career in art and it ended up being just that. Risk taking can also be seen in my art by going against the grain when it comes to traditional film photography. After my film has been developed I don’t stop there. I incorporate physical film distortion to add a CRYS touch to the photo. This all starts with a foundation of just taking a risk. What happens if I add bleach to the photo? What if I burn it? The only why to find out is by doing. Through risk taking I have been able to create an identifiable style for my brand as an artist.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My approach to curating eye catching film sets me apart from others when it comes to photography. My work is beginning to explore the ideas of another universe and the harmony of contrast. My distortion of film creates such a unique look that I have never seen done before and that’s what I am most proud of. I have recently started tapping into my fashion roots where I print my photos on unique hoodie designs that are released exclusively on crysonfilm.com. Getting to where I am today was not easy and I still have a way to go. A lot of trial and error and overcoming doubts was included but thats just a part of the game. Through it all I learned that the more you believe in yourself, and your path, the more you will attract those that align with your believes. This is so important when It comes to not giving up! You will be tested and you will have to overcome obstacles but as long as you see your vision on where you’re going, you can achieve.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m such a beach person so the first place I’m taking someone is Manhattan Beach to catch the sun set! This beach is perfect if you’re not looking to be over crowded with a ton of tourist. Also whale watching in Newport Beach is a must! You never fail to run into hundreds of dolphins for an unforgettable view. Of course we would have to take a trip down the PCH to Malibu for an authentic California view of mountains and water. For food, I got a couple recommendations depending on what you’re in the mood for. You can never go wrong with pizza and Bootleg Pizza is a MUST if you have not tried it before. Best pizza I’ve ever had hands down. The sour dough crust provides the perfect crunch to soft ratio for a pizza. A couple other recommendations I have for food are Ackee & Bamboo which is Jamaican food and Jinya’s Ramen for some of the best vegan ramen I have ever tasted!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to give a shoutout to my soul tribe for the never ending support in everything that I do! I appreciate this more than words, they keep me motivated and keep me going! I also want to shoutout everyone helped me in the early stages of shooting. When I look back at some of my early photos I cant help but cringe at some but I am so thankful for the friends that were just down to shoot whatever idea I had in mind. They helped me create a vision that I see so strongly today <3
