We had the good fortune of connecting with Cynthia Billingslea and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cynthia, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Hey Girlfriend Network is dedicated to providing positive resources to help those in need. We use the platform which has a social media following of over 20,000 people to seek and provide information. Job openings, housing resources, food and clothing giveaways, small business marketing are just a few of the things that are shared to various communities. Knowledge is power and sometimes people just don’t know where or how to seek assistance. Our mission is designated to provide basic need resources.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have worked full time for the City of Los Angeles since 1991 – my evenings and weekends away from my professional job are spent on Hey Girlfriend Network community events. My plan once I retire is to be a full time community outreach worker. There is such a tremendous need to help others less fortunate and it is my joy to advocate for others and provide resources for their benefit. In 2007, I held a Girlfriends Luncheon with approximately 74 women and it was really just to bring women together in a pleasant setting. That event was inspired by Oprah Winfrey who held a Legends Ball in 2006 for her circle of friends and it was awesome. I wanted to do something on a regular level and after my 2007 event I was encouraged by those in attendance to do it annually. Each event grew and I decided to make it a charitable event to help others and every year I select a local organization to help with their community initiative. In addition to our signature women’s event, there are several community outreach events held throughout the year like food & clothing drives, back to school giveaways etc
My brand is based on just a few words – “Each One, Reach One”. It doesn’t take anything from you to simply share positive information that may bring hope to someone hopeless.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite pastime is being a foodie! Itinerary would definitely consist of delicious food anywhere from the streets of South Central to Beverly Hills. Since it would be a vacation for me too we would stay at a hotel – probably the Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills which has a fantastic rooftop bar, near many restaurants and plenty of shopping! If time allowed, going to a gambling casino to play some slot machines would be a fun pastime as well.

Being around loved ones brings me joy and unfortunately due to COVID-19 I haven’t seen many people since March 2020. I look forward to when “normal” returns and being around those fun and exciting people!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shoutout to every single person who has supported me over the years and Hey Girlfriend Network which was established in 2007. If people didn’t support there would not be a network of resources. Thousands have helped us grow to over 20,000 people who follow the network.
