We had the good fortune of connecting with Dalon Holland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dalon, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think of risk as something that can be equally beneficial or harmful, and that life itself is level a of risk everyday. As a whole, risk is pretty much unavoidable so why not take some by choice? The statement, “high risk, high reward” is absolutely true. Some people would call my career path risky, but it’s a risk I am willing to take because I love acting, and creating. There’s a high risk, high reward scenario here and that’s risk my time, energy, and ‘stable’ opportunities, with the reward for being able to make a living doing something that’s called to me since childhood. Other than in my career path, I have chosen to take mild risk in the stock market as of a few years ago. That choice in my life has been a great example of the duality of risk.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m an actor by career choice, but my art is to convey stories. For me it doesn’t matter if it’s fictitious or based on real events, sci-fi or comedy, live action or voice over, I enjoy storytelling! I find it exciting to be able to take ideas, and words off of a page and turn that into something that doesn’t have to be imagined anymore. To be able to deliver people a pleasurable experience by bringing a series of words to as close to life as possible. A long the way, as I’ve learned to turn entertainment into a career, I’ve realized the truth behind the words ‘just have fun’, as so many say. I absolutely love my career but there are absolutely, challenges involved with it. When you’re doing something where most of your attempts end in rejection, like the auditioning process it’s 100% important to ‘just have fun’. I’ve found by doing your best to keep a “no pressure policy” as my friend, coach, and fellow actor, Choice Skinner says, it prevents what you’re doing from ever feeling like a job. Just having fun, not only helps keep your spirits high when you don’t get that perfect role. Remembering the fun in it, through the difficult times always drives me to improve my abilities. I believe applying the love and the fun are the perfect way to prosper. I love acting and storytelling, and I want to take that love, combine it with skill, and the village it takes to make a movie/series, so that the love and experience can be shared by all who will watch.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Favorite spots in the city! I’ve always been bad at picking ‘favorites’, too many choices! I think the same could be said for the scenery, food, and experiences of LA. My preferred places tend to be light on the hustle and bustle, while being heavy on the relaxation. I tend to pick hiking trails like Escondido, low-key beach areas, or food places. When friends from out of state visit, I do like to give them quick drive through of the more cliche LA locations before getting their own preferences and showing them around to places like Tatsu Ramen(yes, its a favorite). Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Thinking back on my successes, I’m thankful that a lot of the names and faces to show support for me repeat. I have been lucky in my life to have encouragement, words of love, support, and mentorship from various people along the way. I want to dedicate this shoutout to my mom, Eddina for being one of the earliest people to tell me to ‘just try it out’, or to take risks. The encouragement to take a brave step into the unknown is something that I have chosen to keep instilled in my life.
