We had the good fortune of connecting with Damien S. Navarro and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Damien S., what are you inspired by?
What inspires me is the profound belief in the transformative power of investment in our youth and breaking down the barriers that stand before them = simply – going beyond diversity, equity, and inclusion to focus on investment to garner quantifiable life-changing results. Over my career, I’ve seen firsthand how embracing many voices—not just in terms of ethnicity, disabilities, sexuality, or gender, but also in acknowledging the traumatic experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds of those who have faced deep financial, generational, and educational setbacks —can drive systemic change and foster growth that benefits everyone. This philosophy has been the cornerstone of my efforts, from turning around impactful companies and launching globally recognized non-profits to developing AI-tech startups. These experiences have taught me that innovation thrives on diversity, and by prioritizing inclusive growth, we can craft solutions that address complex challenges in meaningful, sustainable ways.
As a native Angeleno and first-generation college graduate who struggled to find a hand to hold as I entered my professional career in media, I’m particularly inspired by the role of storytelling in enacting social change. The narrative of improving Latino representation in Hollywood, as detailed in the recent 2024 McKinsey “Latinos in Hollywood” report, resonates deeply with my work in media marketing and philanthropy. This alignment underscores my belief in storytelling’s capacity to entertain, enlighten, educate, and inspire action. Through my endeavors, I aim to amplify often overlooked voices, believing that a more diverse narrative landscape can foster understanding, empathy, and community cohesion.
Community empowerment and advocacy form another core pillar of my inspiration. My initiatives, from establishing scholarships and grants to championing health and well-being through international medical relief efforts, are driven by the resilience and creativity I’ve witnessed in communities around the globe. Engaging with these communities has reinforced my commitment to advocating for equitable opportunities and leveraging my platform to support solutions that are not only impactful but sustainable.
Lastly, the innovation and resilience demonstrated by creatives, particularly in the face of adversity, inspire my approach to leadership and problem-solving. The challenges outlined in the “Latinos in Hollywood” report, reflecting systemic barriers yet unwavering creativity, mirror the complexities I’ve navigated throughout my career. These stories of resilience and the pursuit of equity fuel my optimism for the future. I believe that through technology, strategic partnerships, and a steadfast commitment to inclusion, we can break down historical barriers, creating a landscape where everyone has the opportunity to tell their story and make a meaningful impact.
In summary, my inspiration comes from fostering diversity, the power of storytelling, community empowerment, and the relentless pursuit of innovation and resilience. These elements guide my professional endeavors and shape my vision for a more inclusive, understanding, and connected world.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
At the core of my business philosophy lies a relentless pursuit of transformative change within the confines of industry norms and in the broader context of societal progress. My consulting firm, Hueco Tanks, stands apart for its unwavering commitment to fostering equity, driving social innovation, and championing the underrepresented. Our approach sets us apart: we delve beyond surface-level solutions, aiming to unravel the systemic barriers that impede true diversity and inclusion. We’re not just consultants but catalysts for enduring change, leveraging a blend of strategic foresight, technology, and storytelling to empower communities and businesses alike.
I take immense pride in our capacity to navigate the complexities of transformation in various sectors, from media and entertainment to technology and non-profits. My work with Outfest, Comic Relief, BAFTA, Easter Seals, Best Friends Animal Society, and the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences underscores my mission to redefine narratives and create spaces where every voice can be heard (even our furry companions).
My journey to where I am today was far from easy. It has been a tapestry woven with challenges, from overcoming the skepticism that greets unconventional ideas to bridging the gap between potential and opportunity for marginalized voices. These obstacles were surmounted by resilience, a steadfast belief in our mission, and the power of collective action. The support of mentors, the community, and a team that shares my vision has been instrumental in navigating these hurdles.
The lessons learned along the way are manifold. Perhaps the most crucial is that true impact necessitates patience, perseverance, and a readiness to pivot when faced with roadblocks. It’s about staying true to your core values while being adaptable in your approach. Another lesson is the importance of mentorship and community—it’s not just about climbing the ladder but about extending a hand to lift others as you ascend.
What I want the world to know about my brand and story is that Hueco Tanks is more than a business—it manifests a vision for a more equitable and inclusive world. Our story is of passion for societal betterment, belief in the transformative power of technology and media, and commitment to paving the way for future generations to thrive without barriers.
As we look to the future, I am excited about the possibilities. Hueco Tanks’ journey is ongoing, and every day presents new opportunities to make a difference. I hope my work continues to inspire, challenge, and contribute to the tapestry of our collective narrative, driving us toward a world where diversity, equity, and inclusion are ideals and realities lived and experienced by all.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My best friend is a straight Jewish army vet I met in HS when we both played for opposing cities. He was the first person I came out to after he came back from basic training and shipped out to Iraq in 1994. As a biracial queer native Angeleno, our itinerary would have elements that merge our backgrounds.
Day 1 starts at my urban farm in Atwater Village, offering a glimpse into sustainable living in LA. Breakfast features fresh eggs from my chickens with pastries from Proof Bakery, setting a tone of authenticity and connection to the land. We’ll then explore the underrated charm of Atwater Village, where the blend of small-town vibe and cosmopolitan diversity captures the essence of LA. A dinner at Hail Mary Pizza or newly opened Splina or Holy Basil showcases one of my favorite Atwater spots and the community’s attractions.
Day 2 is for all of us outdoor lovers. A morning bike ride down the LA river to my favorite Frogtown breakfast Spot Spoke and Columbe Coffee, followed by a hike starting at the Old Zoo grounds in Griffith Park, reveals breathtaking city 360 views and LA’s natural beauty. The adventure continues with a visit to the REI superstore in Burbank, a paradise for those who crave experiences and gear to match. The evening is reserved for a homemade grill at my place, embracing the simplicity and joy of friendship – with some garden-grown-scalloped potatoes and kabobs.
Day 3 centers us around cultural exploration, starting with Olvera Street, “the birthplace of Los Angeles”, amazing live Mariachi Music, and Pico House, the home of the first queer ballroom culture and safe space in LA, and lunch at the famous Phillips; this area is a testament to the city’s rich Mexican heritage and history. In the evening, we’ll experience authentic Armenian cuisine at Raffi’s Place in Glendale, highlighting LA’s incredible cultural mosaic of offerings – and maybe a movie at the Laemmle Glendale – my favorite local indie cinema.
Day 4 After breakfast at Bub’s and Gradma’s in Glassel Park, we head over through Los Feliz and Silver Lake, neighborhoods brimming with creativity and indie spirit. Lunch in Los Feliz at Alcove, followed by a visit to Silver Lake Reservoir and my favorite Dog Park in LA. Shopping is top-of-mind today as we explore the hundreds of mom-and-pop and vintage spots dotting Sunset Blvd (Madewell, Yolk, Undefeated) as well as stop by the queer-historical spot, The Black Cat to pay homage to the badass ancestors who have come before us. Dinner at the Indian-pizza-sports bar, Piija Palace, in Echo Park punctuates the essence of LA’s culinary mashup with our other favorite pastime and competition.a
Day 5 is dedicated to the bustling energy of Downtown LA. From the reimagined historic charm of the Arts District, breakfast at Manuela in Hauser and Wirth, and a visit motorcycle-themed spot Bike Shed Moto Co, followed by a final stop at t the contemporary vibe of ROW DTLA and all of its incredible shopping (Shades of Grey, Bel Kazan, Flask and Field) we’ll explore the city’s dynamic core. The day caps off with a visit to Grand Central Market, where the flavors of the world converge in one lively spot, with likely a grab-and-go from Jose Chiquito or Moon Rabbit.
Day 6 focuses on reflection and remembrance. We start in Old Pasadena for shopping and lunch, followed by an afternoon at the Griffith Observatory for some stellar views. The day ends on a personal note, with a backyard gathering at my urban farm, a small but meaningful gesture to honor the sacrifices made by those who’ve served, inspired by my best friend’s journey.
Day 7 allows us to unwind and say our farewells leisurely. Visiting Fern Dell in Griffith Park offers tranquility and connection to nature. We conclude our week with a memorable dinner at Morihiro in Atwater Village, celebrating the art of sushi and the shared moments that define our experiences in LA.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In reflecting upon my journey and the many hands that have shaped it, I’m compelled to dedicate my shoutout to a constellation of the dozens of mentors, the Outfest community, and foundational experiences that have guided my path. At the forefront is the vibrant, resilient community of Los Angeles—the city of my roots. With its rich tapestry of cultures, stories, and struggles, this city has been my greatest teacher, instilling in me the values of diversity and resilience from a young age.
The groundbreaking studies and work of the Williams Institute, MIT Labs, the Latino Donor Collaborative, and the insights from the recent McKinsey’s “Latinos in Hollywood” report are equally deserving of recognition. These organizations have broadened my understanding of the systemic barriers facing underrepresented communities in media and fortified my resolve to drive change through my work. Their dedication to uplifting voices and experiences echoes my commitment to equity and access.
On a personal note, I must honor my family of immigrants and native American ancestors. My abuela’s (Nana) stories of perseverance, migration, and the relentless pursuit of a better life have been my guiding light. Her sacrifices laid the groundwork for my ambitions, reminding me of the power of resilience and the importance of creating opportunities for those who come after us.
Lastly, to the countless individuals and communities that made up the beneficiaries of several of the non-profits I’ve sat on the boards of or helmed programs for, whose shared stories have touched my life—your experiences have been the wellspring of my inspiration. From those facing financial, generational, and educational setbacks to the creatives defying odds in the face of adversity, your strength fuels my mission. It is to you all that I dedicate my efforts, aiming to craft a world where every voice finds its echo and every dream has the space to unfold.
My shoutouts hopefully represent a mosaic of the many influences that have shaped my perspective and purpose. To everyone who has been a part of my story—thank you. Your support, mentorship, love, and encouragement have contributed to my success and enriched the tapestry of our collective narrative, driving us toward a more inclusive, understanding, and connected world.
