We had the good fortune of connecting with John Petrocelli and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Several years ago I was introduced to Prince who wanted to create a direct to consumer music store as part of his NPG Music Club. I downloaded an mp3 of ‘Purple Rain’ from a file sharing network, encrypted it and sent it to him. The file when opened asked for a payment to authorize access to play the song. I got an email back from his team that read “Prince says this is exactly what eye want 2 do” and we were off to the races. Shortly thereafter he asked us to build a direct to fan ticketing service for his upcoming tour and I got to attend many of the dates on that tour along with some warm up shows and after parties. It was pretty incredible and I knew I wanted to work in live entertainment. Shortly thereafter I took over a livestreaming company that I had been advising for many years and AEG immediately bought that company. During this process I had evangelized livestreaming to YouTube and the planets aligned and we produced and powered an Alicia Keys concert from an AEG venue livestreamed on YouTube sponsored by American Express. YouTube hired my team at AEG for 3+ years and we powered nearly every major livestream on YouTube. This process of working with Prince, getting acquired by AEG and all of the YouTube projects convinced me to start my own livestreaming business and we’re now in our 8th year and have livestreamed some of the most watch experiences in livestreaming history. It’s been an interesting and exciting journey.

What should our readers know about your business?
My company, Bulldog DM, is a livestreaming company for premium content. We are the first company of our kind in the industry and the most experienced. We provide turnkey best practice solutions for brands, agencies, artists, content creators, promoters and platforms. We get to work on some of the most high profile projects in media today and as a result of the pandemic we’ve seen a global interest in livestreaming. Our clients include Spotify, Procter & Gamble, Netflix, Apple, AT&T, Samsung, American Express, the NFL, Coca-Cola, Sony, Nestle, Snickers, Hyundai, Tiffany, Hilton, Nissan, Xfinity, Jeep, and Facebook. We specialize in working with brands and the music industry and in many cases we power music experiences sponsored by brands. We’ve developed a market leading expertise in live-streaming on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Twitch, LinkedIn, TikTok and Instagram but we also build white labeled live experiences that can live on any website. When we first started livestreaming was largely unknown and we had to spend a majority of our time focusing on education and evangelism. I’ve been a big follower of Mark Cuban for all of my career who in many ways is The Godfather of streaming and he’s always emphasized sales and customers and I’ve been lucky to always have customers which are the lifeblood of any start up.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I very much enjoy taking my Bulldogs to both The Grove and The Farmer’s Market, both are very walkable and relaxing and all of the stores at The Grove are dog friendly. Sunday drives out to Malibu are both scenic and relaxing and we try to spend some time at LACMA every month especially at Ray’s and Stark outdoor restaurant. We have our favorite local restaurants like Della Terra on Beverly and Seabutter on Olympic for sushi. I’ve become a fan of hotel bars like The Peninsula, Four Seasons and the Montage and when in Santa Monica: Shutters and Casa Del Mar. Two of my all time favorite places are The Hollywood Bowl and The Greek for concerts.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife. We met just after I started my business and she’s been very understanding and supportive of an entrepreneur’s life – both the setbacks and triumphs. Moreover, she’s an expert in traditional media and television advertising so I’ve been able to learn about that side of the ad business and how it relates to digital media. She’s joined me in taking an interest in my personal passions of live music, travel, bulldogs and Boston sports teams. I’ve married into a large and creative family and its been uplifting and nourishing to be surrounded by so much support, positive energy – and incredible meals. We’ve been able to attend multiple music festivals together, the Spotify Awards in Mexico City and numerous UB40 concerts.
