Meet Dane Hesse | Barber/Barbershop Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dane Hesse and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dane, what is the most important factor behind your success?
My barbershop became successful because of consistency, both in the quality of the haircut and showing up to work. So many people in my industry can be flaky. I realized that “what not to do” is cancel on people last minute or block off too many days of work. I have only missed about 12 days in 10 years of owning my shop. I use a scheduling application called Acuity to streamline the booking process, provide open availability to my customer, and maintain a standard of openness.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Professional growth isnt something barbers typically talk about. Its not a corporate job with annual goals built in. I have always gravitated towards people who are smarter than me, in one way or another, and Ive made friends with an eclectic group of people who help challenge my view of success in business. Consistency, while not always fun or spontaneous, has given me and my family a future in this barbering industry.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Orange County has such an awesome expanse of things to do. If I had to throw out a few spots for an itinerary….breakfast at Outpost Kitchen, lunch out at Brewery X, dinner at Oak and Coal, drinks/live music at Wayfarer….throw in some beach time if the weather permits, catch a Anaheim Ducks game, get tattooed at Goldrush Tattoo. Sums up a pretty nice day.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
What a tough thing to do as a barber. My life, paying my bills, etc all hinge on my loyal customers base. They truly are who make my world go round financially. As far as my career growth goes, my friend Tom Roussel clued me into a little known, at the time (2013), mens grooming brand called Uppercut Deluxe based out of Brisbane, Australia. The rest is history. Ive been an active brand ambassador for Uppercut since then.
