We had the good fortune of connecting with Dani Burlile and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dani, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I had a very interestingly wild upbringing, which has impacted me positively. I have had the pleasure to live in many states and cities. I have lived in Idaho, Utah, California and Mississippi to name a few. I am currently located in Los Angeles, CA. Living in so many different environments and cultures has made running a business significantly easier for me. I can get along and service just about anybody regardless of their background. It also makes the core of my business attractive to many groups of people. Finding common grounds with people is very gratifying to me and my brand.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am someone who does everything they say they are going to do- if not better. When I first got into this industry, I was not planning to stay in it for long. My plan was to use my cosmetology license as a way to have a comfortable income to pay for a college degree. However, I truly can not do anything half-way. Therefore, once I got hooked onto this industry, I dropped out of college leaving a 72 thousand dollar investment in tuition. As the maximalist I am, I became a first-prize, award-winning lash artist, celebrity lash artist, lash trainer and lash business owner. Even with the devastations the pandemic presented us, I still would make that same decision all over again.

The Lash Temple wasn’t built in a day. It actually built in about one week! I most definitely do not recommend any aspiring business owner to do that though! The reason I had expedited the standard business opening protocols was because I had so much experience and vision that I needed to challenge myself. I needed to expand and call my own shots. It has most definitely not been easy but it has been so worth it! The most relatable way I can explain it, is it is like working out. It sucks when you are actively putting in the labor but the long-term results are priceless! My golden key to success would be: Do not pour into others cups more than you pour into yours. Whether that be a current employer, friend, family, relationship, etc. It will only distract you from your goals and set you back significantly.

Given the pandemic nearly crumbled my industry, I have been truly dazzled with the creativity small business owners like myself have to showcase to revive and pivot their businesses. I myself have also created extensions of my business. One of them being The Modern Lash School. The Modern Lash School is set to be launching in October 2022. This will be a modern, state-of-the-art lash school based on the years of my successes- and failures. I am modeling this off of what I have learned as well as what I wish I had learned so I can set other lash professionals up for success. I do not see anyone as competition as there are plenty of people to service world wide. We need more incredible lash artists and my new mission is to produce just that!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Angeles is a pandoras box of colorful experiences. I have lived many lifestyles here over the years therefore, I have become somewhat of a LA experience curator. For food I would highly suggest Ernie’s Mexican Restaurant in NoHo, Kombu Sushi in Silverlake, Mama Shelter in Hollywood, Post & Beam in Baldwin Hills and for the boujee- Ocean Prime in Beverly Hills. Drinks I would have to say El Carmen in WeHo, Bar Franca in DTLA, Nativo in Highland Park and for non-drinkers Silverback Coffee in Echo Park, Cafe Tropical in Silverlake. I also love a fresh coconut or Thai tea from Hoy-Ka in Hollywood. Wholesome activities I always suggest are the Echo Park Swan Boats, Cakeland LA, Drag Bingo at Hamburger Mary’s, Cinespia, Olvera Street, Little Tokyo’s Japanese Village Plaza, and Paradise Cove Beach.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
That is a tough one! There are so many people I would love to shoutout. However, my absolute OG, ride or die supporter is my grandfather. He raised me in such a tailored-fashion that no other parent could compete. At a young age he motivated me to be the hustler that I am. I am almost certain he knew that a regular 9-5 job just was not for me. My grandfather gifted me knowledge. Knowledge in finances, day-to-day skills and small yet impactful life wisdoms that just made life easier. I will forever be grateful for these traits and I choose to pass that knowledge down through my business.
