We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Bourget and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daniel, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I love technology and math, but I also enjoy music and creativity just as much. So I ended up picking a career that had an equal amount of both. There are an endless number of things to learn on the technological side of recording, but there is also an equal portion of creativity when you get to produce. I don’t think I could have held a traditional job with a boss and the same set of tasks, I simply would not have lasted more than a year. It’s been a long journey but well worth it in the end. A lot of sacrifices were made over a long span of time.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am definitely proud of where I am today. When I first started I had no gear at all and was just working at a commercial studio for the experience. After starting to build my own studio, I only had a couple inexpensive pieces of gear so that I could at least do the most basic work. Over the last 5 years of working for myself from home I have completed 3 new isolation booths, a new control room with isolated electrical, and a large live room for drums or full band. Going from recording 1 instrument with 1 input and 1 mic, to now having 54 inputs, preamps and microphones.
This was certainly no small feat and required quite a great deal of sacrifice. I have been eating cheap food made at home for 5 years, have a car from 2000, and a bunch of hand me down (or band) shirts and clothes. I would say the most important thing is to have a grasp on the scope of your dream/vision so that you can properly prepare yourself mentally. Most things that are worth doing will take time to do. One of the lessons I learned throughout this process was to never give up despite how you may be feeling at that exact moment. It seems things go well immediately following a very challenging time filled with self doubt and the temptation to walk away. So just stick with it and something should give. Especially when it’s getting hard.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Take them to the beach and feed them burritos, 100%. Aside from that, work on some music and do a little hiking in the beautiful surrounding nature areas.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I don’t think credit belongs to any one person, but rather, all the people I have taught along the way. I have learned the most from teaching, because you really have to know your stuff in order to teach it to others. It also taught me to lead by example and to never give excuses.
