We had the good fortune of connecting with Danielle Kunzman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Danielle, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I decided to start my own brand and Tiktok account when I learned that, despite similar earnings, a man’s net worth is twice as high as a woman’s due to a lack of confidence and risk aversion in relation to investing.
I was nervous about putting myself out there, but I felt like the confidence gap and net worth gap were not being talked about enough, so I decided that I would bring light to these issues in a fun and creative way. I’ve always been a risk taker- I moved out to LA at 19 without ever having been on a plane before, so starting a TikTok was easy compared to moving across the country alone!
My hope is that my content appeals to 20-something-year-old women who are looking to invest in themselves and in their future. I hope that I can guide young women through the tough-to-navigate-20s on a personal and professional level.
Whether through product reviews, career advice, or personal finance tips, I want to change what it means to be an influencer by giving women tools for a better life long-term.
I also hope to inspire women to write their own mission statements. Personally, when I read ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’, my life was changed when I learned about personal values and mission statements. Ever since, I have a list of values, such as authenticity and creativity, that guide me in all my endeavors. Is this task true to who I am? Am I able to express myself? These are my core values and I want to inspire young women to find theirs!
The principle that matters most to me comes from the quote “Begin somewhere. You cannot build a reputation on what you intend to do.” This quote instilled in me the core principle of effort; no matter how tired I am, no matter how out-of-left-field something is, I will always try my best. I like to say that I may not be the best, but I will always try my best!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think that what sets me apart from other content creators is that I am guided by a compass of core values that I refuse to stray from.
If I am doing a product review, I look it at from the lens of ‘is this worth it for a 20-something-year-old to invest in’? I look at each purchase as investment, and I carefully consider the pros and cons from a unique perspective.
I am most proud of my 5-second-financial-fact series. In this series, I present a quick, often polarizing, financial fact about the net worth and investment gap between men and women. Often, women will reach out to me shocked at the statistic and ready to start their personal finance journey. Additionally, some men don’t take too kindly to these facts and let me know in the comments. Wonderfully, though, I have been able to level with even the most irate commenters and find common ground that we can agree on. I genuinely feel that these difficult and uncomfortable conversations help us grow and I am happy that I can provide a platform for that!
I am a small creator, but I am lucky enough to have a dedicated following. I got to where I am today on TikTok due to consistency. The TikTok algorithm loves consistency and rewards consistent creators. That would be my number one piece of advice to aspiring microinfluencers: post multiple times a day at the same times and Tiktok will reward you!
I want the world to know that it is possible to overcome adversity and become a guiding force for others. I want women to know that they are worth just as much as men, both literally and figuratively. And, I want to give women the courage and tools to invest in themselves for a brighter future!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a little biased as a USC alum here, but I would make visiting USC a top spot on my itinerary. The campus is inspiring and you can feel the greatness that lives within.
Next, I would go to Santa Monica Pier, it is the classic tourist spot but I still love it, even as a local! I love the energy of the tourists and I love that there are so many great food trucks and local vendors to support by the Pier!
I would also be sure to visit La Brea Bakery Cafe. They offer a assorted basket of bread with jams and butter and the patio has an awesome. It is close to Republique but never as crowded!
Of course, I would take my friend to see the Hollywood sign. She’s not much of a hiker so I would take her to the Hollywood Reservoir to take a short walk to see the Hollywood sign away from tourists.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My life changed when I read ‘7 Habits of Highly Effective People’. Suddenly, I was inundated with inspiration. I literally had ideas of greatness in my sleep!
This book made me realize that I had the ability to be great.
At the same time, I read the poem ‘Why She Disappeared’ by Taylor Swift.
The poem ends like this:
without your past,
you could never have arrived-
so wondrously and brutally,
By design or some violent, exquisite happenstance
Reading all of this together made me realize that my past and upbringing in a financially disadvantaged family was not a hinderance, but was a catalyst for all that I had accomplished and all that I would accomplish.
Taylor gave me the courage to apply to my dream job and she gave me the courage to put myself out there on the internet. ‘7 Habits’ gave me the tools to succeed at these endeavors.
