Meet Dave Marx: Music Producer & Founder of Arty Masters

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dave Marx and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dave, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Sometimes the biggest risk you can take is staying with the safe path. I had a stable career working for Google and YouTube in the Bay Area from 2013 -2020 and chose to leave that job and move to Los Angeles to start my career as a music producer even though I had no hit songs, label deal, or financial backing. One month into being a music producer full time, COVID lockdown hit and I had to take a serious look at whether I could make this dream of mine a reality on the timeline I had planned. I think one of the most important things about taking risk is not pulling out the first moment things get tough or it looks like your investment might not pay off. Did I expect to make it in one month anyway? No. I used that time to build my engineering and production skills, develop new artists, and launch my artist services company Arty Masters. Now that life is somewhat getting back to normal I feel more prepared than ever to do what I set out to do initially – help artists produce their ideas and share them with the world.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think my ability to listen makes me a great producer. One of the most important part of my jobs is to be able to be there for an artist in both a creative and a human way. So many times in the studio, the song or idea is found in the initial getting to know you conversation – the “How was your day?” or, “What were you up to before you came here?”

This skill didn’t come overnight. I’ve been working in artistic and business groups for 15+ years and had the opportunity to create something with an incredibly wide variety of personality types. Learning how to take my ego out of it as much as I can and genuinely listen to what my partner, teammate, or the artist I’m working with wants to do has been one of the most important skills I’ve developed.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Take a walk down the beach in Manhattan Beach in the morning

Grab a Happy Hour in Culver City in the afternoon
