We had the good fortune of connecting with David Crafa and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I never really thought about actually starting a business. It came about organically from freelance work. Once I realized that the Freelance gigs weren’t dying down but actually increasing to a point that I had to hire an assistant, I started the Cutting Room.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been grateful to have had the opportunity to work in the profession of my choice even iff the jobs were not high profile in the beginning . I kept working each and every lead. Many were bad but then some were good and others were spectacular. I left no stone unturned. I gave freely to others when it came to my artistic talents and let other people take the credit for my creative input. I made others look good and in return they gave me more and more opportunities to excel. That in a nutshell put the Cutting Room brand on the map and the rest is history as they say!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well not to be biased but I love hanging out at the Cutting Studios. I meet the most interesting new talent and also OG’s from back in the day as well. Its a culture and artistic hub where many different styles and ideas , culture merge. Thats the type of atmosphere we have created in NYC. In addition to our Facility in the Old Tower Records Flagship building in SOHO, we have just opened up a second location in Chelsea which focuses on Live Music, Immersive mixing, Large format orchestral and broadway musical recording as well as traditional recording studio services. WE also have an event space which we use for live internet radio streaming and industry events.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would have to say my parents. Even though my dad was tough on me at times ( I had super long hair and played in a punk/metal bandit the time) I can now understand the fear they had about my determination to be a musician. However I finally wore them down and they began to believe in me. That was a huge boost for me and I didn’t want to disappoint them. I worked every session I could back then and I was grateful to have the opportunity no mater who the client was. I set up a system of measuring my success each month and even through it was a lot of work I could see the progress each month and tried to break the record.
