We had the good fortune of connecting with David Dean and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?

The most important factor behind my success/the success of my brand is honestly a combination of several things. First, without God/my faith I wouldn’t be where I am today and where I will continue to go. I grew up being in the church and learning about God at a very young age because of my parents and I’m very thankful for that.
The next important factor would be taking risk continuously. I’ll be the first to admit it’s not easy or comfortable, but every risk I have taken in my career has helped my business grow more. I remember being so afraid to take that leap and leave my ”9-5″ job and bet on myself, but I watched other people in my life do it which encouraged me to take the next step. Now with that being said, it doesn’t get easier, but you will have the choice of where your career and life will go.
Lastly, I can’t stress the importance of having a team of other like-minded individuals. This has been monumental for my business growth and personal growth. My team holds me accountable, is honest and have played an important role in bouncing ideas for my brand. The entrepreneurship journey can get lonely, but it helps when you have people who understand what you’re doing.

What should our readers know about your business?

I am the CEO of Key Communication Speech & Language Services, Inc. We offer speech and language services for ages 0-21 with a specialty in early intervention services for ages 0- 3years old. These services can be clinic-based, in-home, virtual and bilingual for Spanish speaking families.
The journey to get to this point in business has been challenging, but very rewarding because I feel myself evolving as the business grows. With every risk there are pros and cons no matter what. As these cons and challenges presented themselves, I made the choice to cast out doubt and fears that would hinder the progress of my growth.
It’s easier said than done, but you will make mistakes with money, situations, and even hiring staff at times. However, I made the decision not to repeat those mistakes even though it taught me valuable lessons.
I want the world to know that you can achieve anything you want but it starts with the mindset shift. Make sure you are consuming information that will hep you grow. Prioritize what you really want in life and go for it, especially for individuals that look like me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

So I’m still exploring LA myself, but I have my spots that I like to hang out. For food I would take them to the following: Perch, Catch LA, Castaway, Mama Shelter, NOBU, Avra, TAO, Mr. Chows. They’re so many food options so it would be fun exploring them.
We could also hang out in Runyon Canyon, Griffith Observatory, The Getty, African American Museum, The Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen Inglewood. Just to list a few. The beaches also offer options to hang out and explore.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

I could thank a lot of people, but I will first thank my parents and family. I come from a small town (Charleston, SC) and it was hard leaving them when I moved to LA. However, they have been my backbone even 2500 plus miles away. The amount of support and encouragement I get from family and close friends have been so helpful over the years. I often get phone calls from some letting me know how proud they are of me and to keep following my dreams.
In addition, I have a separate group of friends in LA that are all speech-language pathologist, all black and have their own private practices as well. It is very rare in my field to find that many African Americans in one city and who are all on the same entrepreneurship path. They have been such a blessing to have because we all can relate to the highs and lows of having a business in our field and being a part of the 3.6% of black speech-language pathologist.
