We had the good fortune of connecting with David Violi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, how do you think about risk?
Risk has been an essential part of my world, both the good and the rough times. For me, it’s an educated risk, not just a blind risk, you have to know what you are getting into and you have to be prepared and you must be willing to continue to learn and change. In the acting world, risk is essential, there are very few people that show up to Hollywood and are immediately successful. Most careers take time, a long time. You know, there’s no 401K for struggling artists…lol. You don’t know when or if another job is coming, it’s the belief in yourself, in your work and preperation that keeps you going. So, the risk is your security, mostly financial security. But, to me there is a greater risk involved and that is risking NOT doing what you love and what makes you happy. A favorite saying of mine is “Fortune Favors the Brave” and to be brave there is a certain amount of risk involved. You need to be able to fight through all the people that tell you “No”, all those people that don’t believe in you and the rough times when you may have to eat ramen for weeks…lol…I’ve been there! But, if I had quit and not continued to risk I wouldn’t be where I am today and where I am still heading. Also, the process of acting requires risk. You can’t just play it safe with roles or auditions you need to let it all go or you’re not going to get that far. Trying to do what you think others want is the kiss of death in acting. What they want is you, you to give a life to the printed page. To bring your beautiful uniqueness to the role. Risk is everything to me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
This is going to be an exciting year! I have two upcoming projects that I will be starring in. This is what I love about this business, these are two amazing projects and they are completely different! One, “Through Jade’s Eyes” is an intense crime drama. I play Detective Hamilton who is forced to work with a psychic medium, Jade Frost, who has visions that are seemingly connected to crimes. There are so many twists and turns and such a dynamic relationship between them, I can’t put down the scripts when I’m reading them! Hopefully, the audience will feel the same when they are watching.

Then the opposite of that gritty, real-life drama is the magical, fantasy world of “Realm of the Waterfall” where unique societies and cultures all clash for world domination. Intevar, is my character, from The House of Draven. Filming this will be on a mind-blowing scale, with incredible locations and special effects.

Hard work pays off and I’m fortunate and excited to have projects to work on. Keep them coming!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is a great question, because there is so much to do. Well, it’s Southern California so we have to start with the beaches. It’s hard to pick a wrong one, Malibu is beatiful with it’s coves, Santa Monica has the pier, but I love Manhattan Beach. It’s a little more chill with nice big wide open beaches and some great shops and restaurants within walking distance. Then we can take a little drive up to Big Bear Lake, another favorite getaway of mine. It’s just beautiful there in the winter or summer. I can really recharge there. We will need a slower day, so let’s go play 18 holes of golf, the Riviera would be nice if they’d let me in haha. Follow that up with some drinks and an amazing dinner in Beverly Hills. Where? Just pick you really can’t go wrong here. Now, let’s finish up the week with a trip out to Catalina Island! My ultimate at-home getaway. We could hop a helicoper over, but I really like the boat ride out. We get a sweet, luxury hotel room and just relax. We can hit the spa and a beach bar and I’m set! Wow, this sounds like a great week haha. I didn’t even get to Palm Springs or some hikes, but we can save them for the next time!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Shoutout goes to a man who is long overdue one. He is my mentor, my coach, and my friend. He’s been in the acting world for many, many years working with actors from the biggest names to the talented newcomers that he just “sees” something in. His name is Tom Orth. I was lucky enough to meet him a number of years ago and began working and studying with him. He’s, also, always been that calming voice in this crazy world of show business. There’s a lot of noise in this business a lot of people that want your money for their “secret to success” and Tom reassured and solidified in me the belief that what I am doing is enough, to disregard all that noise and focus on the craft and the business of acting. He’s always there for a question with an honest answer, he’s not looking to have his name plastered everywhere. He truly loves this art and the artists involved. Though he would never ask for this attention, I’m happy to shine just a little light his way….it is a long time coming.
