We had the good fortune of connecting with David Vuong and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
For some kids, basketball is their path to college. However not all kids have the chance to play in front of coaches and are not seen by schools at the next level. Generally in most gyms across the US, the media will flock to the high schools of the 5 star prospects and players who generate social media clicks. With The Slam N Jam, it is quite the opposite. I look for underrated and overlooked prospects and provide an opportunity for them. All players regardless of class, gender, and social media buzz get a chance for coverage.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from others in this field is that my full time day job and my business both intertwine and I am able to thrive in both at the same time. I work full time as an influencer manager in the day time for one of the biggest fashion brands in the world. Fashion brands are constantly trying to work with athletes so I use my connections in sports to connect them. In sports, athletes need help in marketing themselves to make them more attractive to schools and other opportunities and I am able to use my skills to help them grow in that regard.
It wasn’t easy getting to where I am today. I went through many different positions and fields before finding something I was passionate about that also honed in my skillset and made use of my network. Early on, I knew I wanted to work in sports as I held gigs in both being a basketball trainer and basketball coach. I also knew I wanted to be in marketing as I had both experiential marketing and social media marketing experience. After moving around a few different companies and juggling along the way, I finally found a comfort zone where I can maximize my talents to be successful at what I do and also help others at the same time.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If someone was to visit Los Angeles, I would definitely take them both hiking at Runyon Canyon in the morning, followed by a stroll on Venice Beach, then grabbing some sushi and ending the night looking at city from the Griffith Park Observatory. I love being outdoors and basking in the sights and sounds the city present. I’ve been all around the country and there is nowhere I would rather be than LA.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife deserves the biggest recognition behind my success. When I left my role at BallerTV, she pushed me to chase my own dreams and to create my own brand. We didn’t have much in our savings but she gave me the OK to spend it all towards a new camera. After that, The Slam N Jam media was born.
