We had the good fortune of connecting with David Weitzman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I chose going into the music business because I am a huge fan of music & wanted to work in a field that inspired me. I could tell you the music I was listening to every single year of my youth.
I had a couple influential people along the way who opened my ears, and I was also fortunate to see bands such as Guns N Roses and Rage Against the Machine very early in their careers & was also into other bands & music movements well before they became popular. Made me think I could utilize my ears to discover new talent. I was fortunate to work with Sublime and other artists early in my career and now my role is to source catalog acquisitions for PW, and I focus on successful artists who I am passionate about. A few of my recent deals that I worked on with the PW are with the estates of Layne Staley & Mike Starr of Alice In Chains, The Joey Ramone estates for his works in The Ramones, Julian Casablancas of the Strokes, and Huey Lewis and the News.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a partner at Primary Wave. We count clients such as Bob Marley, Prince, Stevie Nicks, James Brown, Ray Charles, Burt Bacharach, Smokey Robinson & many more.
What differentiates us is we work with icons and legends and we market them much more aggressively and authentically than our competitors. We make films, musicals, consumer products & more. We are very artist friendly and work closely with our clients, whether they are still active, retired, or their estates.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Too much to do in LA, but for food, sushi at Sushi Park in WeHo & tacos at Guisado’s (multiple locations). For some great hikes or mountain bike rides, I go to the San Gabriel Mountains, Verdugo Mountains or Santa Monica Mountains. Also living on the west coast, there is nothing better than enjoying drinks and snacks with a beach sunset view. Also, there are lots of great live music options like the Hollywood Bowl, The Greek Theatre, or the John Anson Ford for music under the stars-weather permitting…
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give credit to my Uncle Chuck who turned me to The Clash & The Police when I was mostly listening to Ozzy Osbourne, Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest and The Scorpions in elementary school. He also turned on to the New Orleans funk legends, The Neville Brothers & jazz great, Art Pepper, in high school and college respectively. He took me to my first concert which was Herbie Hancock and Steel Pulse in junior high school in San Diego where I grew up.
