We had the good fortune of connecting with Debi Carlin Boyle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Debi, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I already had a side hustle of teaching spin and fitness classes, I was also a personal trainer while I was working my main career as a Commercial Television Producer. I found myself answering lots of questions from crew members and clients about diet and exercise. My passion yelled much stronger toward helping people become healthier as opposed to selling them sugary soft drinks and junk food. I went back to school to study holistic health and nutrition along with taking courses on how to be successful in the Health Coaching field. I must say this is a much more satisfying career choice, watching and helping people realize they have the power to change the direction of their life just by making self-care a priority.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started my company, “Fit By Design” many years ago when I became a Spin Instructor and a Personal Trainer and realized no two people are alike when it comes to diet, exercise, and over-all lifestyle. Much like snowflakes, we are unique human beings, we need to understand our individual responses to what we put into our bodies and how we treat them.

I discovered at a very young age that lifestyle plays a vital role in how we look, feel, and react to everything that surrounds us. I came to realize that there are many things that feed us in life in addition to the food on our plate.

As a young child, I watched as my family succumbed to cancers, heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune diseases that left me feeling helpless and hopeless. I knew I did not want to go down this path for myself – or my future family. That is when my personal journey began towards wellness, and when I truly realized that I could shift my family’s bad habits to good habits for a longer, healthier, and more joyous life.

In college, as I studied theater to become an actress, I also minored in Family Studies and Consumer Sciences, while simultaneously changing my unhealthy childhood habits to healthy ones.

I drastically altered my eating habits from processed foods to whole, fresh foods, such as vegetables, lean proteins, and good fats. I also started playing tennis and weight training which instantly yielded results; I slimmed down, I became more energetic, I eliminated my brain fog, and my hair and nails starting growing like crazy. I quickly started to attract everything I wanted in life simply by making my self-care my number one priority.

The snowball effect of good self-care was undeniably present, and I knew if it could work for me, it could work for anyone.
After many years as a Television Commercial Producer, mother, and wife, I decided it was time to take my knowledge of health and wellness and share it with others.
Reinventing myself mid-life after a divorce wasn’t easy, going back to school and giving up a career that was familiar and lucrative was not only frightening but challenging to start over without financial security. I plowed forward and
I am now a full-time Health, Nutrition, and Fitness Coach with my current company BalancedLife Connect to a Healthier You; helping others see results that are not just dramatic, but lasting and sustainable for their continued healthy lifestyles.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being a born and raised LA girl I would have to take them to all of the Hollywood land marks. I have always been fascinated with the movie and television industry and anyone who knows me knows that, so touring the Hollywood area and visiting The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures would be a must. I would also take them to my favorite places by the beach, both in Malibu, The Soho House and Santa Monica going for sunset drinks at Casa del Mar. A beach day on the sand would also be on the agenda, going to a private quiet beach to enjoy without the crowds.

Bevery Hills and some of the iconic spots is a must such as Rodeo Drive, The Beverly Wilshire Hotel and stopping for dinner at one of my favorite restaurants: Il Pastaio.

I would also check out the music scene during the time of their visit and take them to a fun show maybe at the Saban or Canyon Club, all depends on where I can find a great artist and where in the LA area they might be.

There are so many great places to hike in and around LA, so we’d have to get in one morning of that in as well.

Many Winerys are also in and around LA so maybe an afternoon sunset at Cielo Wines followed by dinner on the lake at Boccaccios.

And of course a quiet fun time making dinner at home with my family and my 16 month old granddaughter to entertain us.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout would be with my family, starting with my father who I lost when I was just 20 years old. He died at the age of 46 and I saw how lifestyle and the lack of self-care, bad diet and no exercise played a role in his early death. This is when my personal health journey began. I also want to recognize my two amazing daughters Marisa and Hannah who have encouraged me all along the way to live my passion in-spite of changing careers in my mid-fifties and knowing I’d be taking a big risk. They have not only cheered me on but have followed my “live a healthy life path” with their own direction as they are both yoga instructors.
My final shoutout is to my granddaughter Kinsley who inspires me everyday to keep doing what I’m doing, looking into those innocent eyes of joy tells me I’m right where I need to be.
