We had the good fortune of connecting with Dechel Mckillian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dechel, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I became a conscious shopper, I had a hard time finding sustainable clothing and accessories that were stylish and fashion-forward. I did a lot of research and discovered brands from all around the world who were producing their collections with respect for people and the planet. They weren’t the first ones to pop up on a Google search. I had to really dig to find them. I knew that if I was having this hard of a time, women like me were probably struggling too. That’s how GALERIE.LA was born! GALERIE.LA is a one-stop-shop for the conscious consumer. We thoughtfully curate a selection of sustainable fashion, clean beauty, and lifestyle goods both in-store at our concept shop at ROW DTLA and online.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
GALERIE.LA is an ethical concept shop that thoughtfully curates sustainable fashion, clean beauty, and lifestyle goods from brands all around the world. We’re online and our flagship store is located at ROW DTLA. I think the fact that you can visit us and shop IRL in a physical store is one of the biggest things that sets us a part from other sustainable fashion online stores. I get excited to see, touch, and feel eco-friendly fabrics and innovative materials each and every time I go to the store. It was NOT EASY to open a retail store. I have to say it in all caps because when I signed the lease at ROW DTLA our store was still a construction site. There were a lot of long hours, blood, sweat, and tears that went into opening the shop. I overcame the challenges because I really believed in my vision. Seeing a new concept and community being formed with sustainability being the focus is incredible to be a part of.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I hope my friend wants to get away and relax! That’s what I find is best when getting a short visit to feel like your on vacation. I love the getaway lifestyle that LA provides. I would spend the week in Malibu seeing beaches like El Matador, Zuma, and Paradise Cove. Have lunch at Malibu Farm. Taste local wines and get up close with animals on a Malibu Wine Safari. Hiking in Tuna Canyon. To name a few of the ways I spend my time getting reconnected with nature.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents deserve the biggest shout-out for encouraging me to pursue my wildest dreams. They’re always there to help me build and fill in when I need an extra hand.
