Meet DeJarra Sims | Dr. DeJarra DJ” Sims

We had the good fortune of connecting with DeJarra Sims and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DeJarra, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I have always taken risks in my career since leaving college and choosing to go to on “the road less traveled” and attending Naturopathic Medical school and then moving from the south to California to start my medical practice. These decisions have all been life altering in the best way. I think of risks as just another decision that we have created fear around. So the goal is not to avoid taking risk, but to resolve ones fear around taking risks. To be honest, I have to credit my faith in God for this mindset and a stoic exercise that I use to conquer fear that I randomly stumbled upon one day in a Tim Ferris blog. In his blog, Ferris teaches a technique called fear-setting in which you define your fear by first asking, what’s the worst that could happen? and writing it down, then secondly listing all the things you can do right now to prevent the worst thing from happening, and thirdly, I write down all the things that I can do to get back to where I am right now, if the worst thing does happen. Boom! Now, I have a plan, my fear of risks is mitigated and I’m free to make the decision that feels like the next right step. By using fear setting, I totally minimize my fear of risk and I take the jump!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As an entrepreneur, I have a lot of irons in the fire. I have developed time-tested protocols for the natural treatment of skin issues, such as eczema, acne, psoriasis, and hair loss, and I have a health consulting firm called SuperHeroSkin+Care, where I consult with patients on these conditions, as well as with other health care practitioners on their patient cases.
As a published author and professional speaker, I present at medical conferences, and corporations. The funnest part about speaking is that I have figured out a way to mix all the things I love and speak at Comic Cons on the science behind magical potions in movies and television. It is so great to share knowledge about real herbs and their use with a fun spin on it.
The thing I am most proud of is the success of my herbal throat spray, Voice Restore. I formulated it to be used by professional singers, actors, speakers and anyone that uses their voice regularly. It was first formulated for a famous gospel singer that was a patient of mine and then as her friends learned of it, I begin making it in small batches and mailing to other performers by special order only. After years of creating it by special order only, I began to sell it commercially and now anyone can order online in the US and Canada! I’m so proud to have a product that I’ve created by hand and watch it develop and grow. From conception to full company took me about 9 years, while working.
The journey has been the best part of being an entrepreneur for me. The road has not been easy, but I only do those things that bring me joy. Imposter syndrome is real for sure and some days you are not motivated to do a thing but if you don’t make time for self-care practices regularly you will get burnt out.
The greatest lesson that I have learned is to get really specific about what you are wanting to share with the world, then be true to who you are. Your tribe will come once you are confident and at peace with who you are and what you have to offer. Be bold, be confident, take up space, yet be humble and grateful for every little blessing because nothing lasts forever and tomorrow is not promised. That’s what I’ve learned.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a touristy-type-of-gal, so My favorite question to ask is “What do you think of when you hear the words Los Angeles?” and we make that vision come true. I love to stick to the classics. I’m going to take them to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Chinese Theater, then we have to go to Madame Tussaud’s while we are there.
We must hit Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles, Pink’s Hot Dogs and Randy’s Donuts… These are quintessential LA tourist foods.
A day a the Getty definitely.
The LACMA and the Broad can be done in one day.
I took classes in improv and comedy writing at the Second City, so when things were open, we would have to see a show at either the Second City or UCB. I would definitely take someone to a stand up comedy show at the Comedy Store or Laugh Factory.
I love love driving down Sunset and taking friends to Beverly Hills. My friends are from the south so everything is ‘big city’ to them and they don’t have to do much but gawk at the Cali life style.
Santa Monica Pier is a must see and Venice Beach is awe-inspiring for any visitor.
Hollywood sign!!! TBH, I do a drive by because I have so many other things to show people.
Eating/Shopping at the Grove
Universal Studios and Disneyland and Roscoe’s again lol

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my father and mother, Roger and Dorothy Sims for continuously supporting me throughout all of my life changes, whether it’s financially, spiritually, or mental emotionally. I have had so many business ventures and they have been my #1 fans throughout the entire process. Their prayers and unwavering enthusiasm, no matter what I’m embarking on, has been a blessing.
