We had the good fortune of connecting with Desiree Parker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Desiree, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success has been diligence. I have heard “no” a lot more that I have heard “yes” as I have been pursuing a career in the entertainment industry. On top of that, people aren’t always nice when they say no. Despite that, I have always kept going and never been discouraged when things don’t go my way. I also have been working on it daily for the past 5 years. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes. The work that others don’t see tends to be what makes the biggest difference. I have always approached the business like a career and been willing to put in the time and effort. I also believe that doing the work that others aren’t willing to do is very important. A lot of people aren’t willing to spend 10 hours on the computer or do 10 auditions to only book one job. However, I am okay with it and I believe that it has been a big reason for much of my success. I believe that nothing great comes easy, you have to be diligent!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from others is my willingness to go the extra mile. Although I love the creative part of modeling and acting such as styling, make up, being on set, acting classes; I always make time for the business portion such as research, sending emails, updating my resume, and supporting others. I am also always willing to show up early, stay longer, and work extra days. I always try to leave the people I work for feeling like working with me was an amazing experience. The part of my career that I have been most proud of has been being able to work with Moguls. Being in a professional atmosphere with so many great people has gave me the efficacy to believe that it also possible for me to be great. I have worked with Kanye West as a Brand Ambassador. I booked a principal role in the Khalid “American Teen” music video. I’ve worked as an actor with Megan Good for her directorial debut, and I have met so many other great people. I have gotten to where I am at today by always approaching acting and modeling like a business. A lot of times being on set is really fun, and there is a lot going on so that it is easy to forget that it is work. I have fun when I am working because I love what I do, but I always keep it professional. Staying in the business this long has not been easy. There has been a lot of uncertainty and times where I would wonder if all the hard work is worth it, but I always keep in mind the bigger picture and why I started and that keeps me going. Along the way, I have learned that it is okay to not know some things because everyone has been a beginner at some point. I have learned that you can’t take things personally. Sometimes things happen and it feels personal, but I always try not to internalize the decisions of others as a reflection of myself. Instead, I strive to keep my integrity and reputation high and that has paid off in so many ways. I want the world to know that I am coming to shake things up and I intend to accomplish everything that I have set out to do.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If someone was visiting me here in a LA. The beach would be a must do! There are so many people that have never been to the beach, let alone a California one. Hearing the waves crash, seeing the ocean’s vastness, and feeling the California sun is something that everyone should do at least once. I would also take them to eat at Tao or Maestro’s because those are my favorite restaurants and they are a great representation of all of the opportunity that LA has to offer. I would take them to an industry party. My favorite part of LA is that there are celebrities everywhere and it is always so fun when someone sees a celebrity for the first time. LA is a place that you can run into just about anyone. Finally, I would take them on a hike at Runyon Canyon because when you hike to the top you can see the best view of LA ever.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a Shout out to Jessica Rae. She was the first person in the business to believe in me and she also booked my first photoshoots for me. I also want to give a shout out to my dad. He is the reason that I have always approached the entertainment industry as a business and has always motivated me to believe that it is something that I can be successful in. He also helped me get my first commercial.
