We had the good fortune of connecting with Destiny Sutton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Destiny, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued a creative career because ever since I was a young girl I was always involved in the arts through various mediums and I knew I was destined to be involved in arts in some way. When I was 7 years old my mom had me enter many different fashion shows and modeling competitions and it really peaked my interest to want to take things further. Unfortunately during my teenage and adult years I did not see much plus size representation so it discouraged me to continue pursuing my passions. After seeing a boom in the plus size industry gaining more respect in the fashion industry I decided to take the leap of faith and get back into it. I redid my digital headshots , practiced and worked on my posing and angles and started to book jobs and the rest has been history for me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
After being in front of the camera for so many years , in 2020 I finally took a risk and developed behind the camera skills. It was not much of a change because I was technically in the same industry but learning how to photograph newborns was a challenge for me. I overcame the challenge by continuously practicing on my craft and watching different videos and demonstrations on how to pose and set newborns up for the perfect shot. What excites me the most about the art that I create behind the camera are the priceless moments and memories that I get to capture as keepsakes for families. Doing engagement, newborn and maternity shoots are the most exciting for me because these are milestone moments in a couples life where they are bringing life together in this world and I feel like that is the most precious and special type of pictures.
As a model I am proud of how far I have come battling my personal insecurities with my own body to becoming a role model figure for many different women who want to be my body positive with their own body. I have learned so many lessons when it comes to being a plus size model in and industry where certain emphasis is still placed on having a nice shape when that is not the reality of most women. I learned that even when others do not accept your version of beauty you still keep going as long as you keep your mind strong and knowing that everyone is not going to view you as attractive or sexy but as long as you view yourself that way the confidence you have for yourself will speak volumes in any room you walk into.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Whenever I go out in the city anything that involves a good brunch with bottomless mimosas is a must! I love going to different museums and pop-up art installations so I would take them to the Tupac: Wake me when I’m Free exhibit because that is a must in LA. I love being a nature so definitely taking a trip to Venice beach or my favorite Malibu Beach El Matador, go on a few nice hikes with a beautiful pacific ocean or Santa Monica mountain view. I am big on music and dancing as well so we would definitely go out to a Black on the block Day party and dance the day away. I would finish the trip off by going to Melrose and stopping by my favorite metaphysical store House of Intuition and if it is a Sunday we are most certainly spending some money at the Melrose Trading Post.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to God and my whole support system, you guys are a small but powerful group of men and women who continue to push and elevate me to achieve all the success and everything my heart desires. There are many times where I have allowed doubt and fear to enter my brain but with all the love and support from you guys it goes away in an instant because I know I’m divinely guided and protected when pursuing my passion.
A super special shoutout to my mother who has shaped me to be the free spirit that I am today going after what I want in life. You have always pushed me to be my best self even on the days I was not up for it. Your support and how you go above and beyond to help me in any way you can is something that is priceless and I love you.
