We had the good fortune of connecting with Devonric Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Devonric, how do you think about risk?
Risk is something I believe that must be taken in order to achieve your goals. After suffering a career football injury, Post Concussion Syndrome, I was lost and didn’t know what I was going to do with my life. After trying different jobs I got scouted to model and took a risk and moved to New York which eventually led to me coming to LA. Fast forward to now, if it wasn’t for that risk I took, I would have never never found my calling in Entertainment and Fitness. I have been in several Films, TV shows, Commercials, Print Ads and have been on several platforms as an On Camera Fitness Trainer. I also have been the Head Trainer at several gyms and have been lucky to have several celebrity clients. I would have been able accomplish things without taking a risk.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have several Ted Talks where I talk my struggles and hardships and how I overcame them. I had a very rough childhood and was blessed to be given a helping hand at the age of 13. It set the pathway to where I am now in my career. The journey to being a working entertainer and a fitness professional has been a long winding one. At some points I doubted myself and thought about pursuing something else. I never wanted to think of myself as quitter so I just dug my heels in and pivoted until I found the right fit for me. As the Head Instructor for Mayweather Boxing + Fitness West LA, I lead and teach by our mantra “Hard Work, Dedication”. This mantra has helped me push through my low times.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First off I love Hermosa so we are going to the beach and boardwalk. I lived down there for 2 years and I absolutely fell in love with South Bay. Then I would take them on hike at Griffith and show them the observatory. I love hiking and being outdoors so that is a must. My next destination would take to the Chinese Theater. I am big movie person so I would want them to see where they did a lot of the red carpet events we saw on TV as kids. My next stop is Venice Beach. I just love the whole eclectic vibe. My best is just like me and would enjoy the whole scene. My last stop would be my favorite restaurant, Katana. The food, the drinks, the atmosphere and the location always puts my heart in the right place.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family. My Mom for her continued support through my ups and downs. My Dad for his wisdom and true telling. My brothers for their inspiration to not stop pursuing my passion. My Godmother for her unconditional love for me. My girlfriend for being the rock I needed lean on.
