We had the good fortune of connecting with Dionna Lipscomb and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dionna, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting Wax with D was to help other women like me understand how to take care of their epidermal skin and to obtain a smooth, radiant and vibrant look. Wax with D understands the skin plays a crucial role in keeping us safe. We can still look good and keep the microbes out.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Wax with D believes the most important factor behind its success is building an intimate rapport with its guests. Wax with D has built a connection and strong trust with its clientele base. Wax with D understands that hair pulled from the follicle can be a little tense but clients know they will still get a calming, efficient and satisfactory service.
My work/ life balance requires consistent revision and is often modified. I have taken observation of my life and am aware that I was not attentive to my health or over all well being due to just trying to survive or pay bills.
The most important lesson that Wax with D has taught me is I’m not running a marathon. To take my time to study what is new on the market, pay attention to the details in each ingredient and to read fine print on all legal document. Wax with D direct one-on-one interaction with its guests servicing is a critical factor in ensuring satisfaction and encouraging repeat business..
After working as an Insurance Broker for nine plus years, I was miserable! I knew I had to take a risk. Leaving the insurance field and entering the beauty industry is a whole new world and was intimidating. Life is about taking risk, falter and failure. It’s the progress that mold us.
The habits that help me are writing everything down. Staying persistent, open to take opportunity that presents itself. What was most important to me was not fearing adversity as a chance for opportunity and offer valuable insight, to truly learn from my mistakes.
Everything around me is an inspiration. Energy, nature, music, beauty, etc. not just the positive outlook but my negative experiences as well. My downfalls and struggles. Looking back I am glad that I had my failures. There is no law written that once someone has failed, they must quit. I had no idea I could be so resilient. Establishing Wax with D was no walk in the park. I have taken on many risks and embraced many challenges.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a home body no doubt! I love staying within my own lane but when I do leave my home I like to have fun. There are so many things to do here in Southern California. Every time I go to Inglewood I love the Nigerian food from the restaurant Sumptuous. I love going to San Pedro and going on one of their trails. I would never forget the time I walked one of their trails and the grass was full of rattle snakes. So many they weren’t hiding. San Pedro rock beach is one of my favorite beaches. Think steak is another restaurant I like in San Pedro, they give you a good amount of good tasting food for the price.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people in my life who deserves credit and recognition for their role in my Wax with D Journey. I would like to give a shout-out to my cousin Kimmie Denise, Andre Jefferson, my Mother Carla Tribble- couldn’t ask for a better one. Auntie Tracey- has always had me and my sisters back. Auntie Carol-after speaking with you I feel like I could run for President. Auntie Lynn- I could never forget what you’ve done for me. Krystle, all my sisters Trionna Carla Antowaniece and Nicole Blount. I could not forget my big cousin Haleana all the way in Texas who calls or text me just to tell me to do something new for my business she’s too funny. My baby girl Aiyonna my heart and my reason! I do not have the space to list anyone else but you know who you are. I appreciate all of you.
