We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominique Calvillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominique, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
While working against human trafficking in South East Asia I began to battle extreme anxiety and depression. I started to crochet obsessively as art therapy. The repetitive stitching gave me peace and the projects gave me a reason to wake up every morning. The more complicated a project, the more my mind was able to focus on crochet instead of being trapped in the anxious loop I was in. I began to design complicated and beautiful dresses. I never knew I had this ability and never intended on starting a fashion brand. It wasn’t until New York Fashion Week called me that I realized I was a fashion designer. The business kind of happed to me. I was just trying to find a way to meditate. My meditation became my passion and then my career.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m Dominique and I’m the designer of Namaste and Crochet. Namaste and Crochet is a 100% handmade crochet clothing line. I specialize in custom wedding dresses and couture crochet pieces. I started my brand while working against human trafficking in South East Asia. I needed something to give me peace amidst the chaos and sadness that I experienced working in the field. Crochet gave me a way to meditate and the more I did it, the more I realized I had a knack for design. Little by little I started to share this art with the world and it brought me to places I never expected like having a runway at New York Fashion Week. This art form has taught me that the sky is the limit when you do something that comes naturally with no expectations. I had no idea this brand would be paying my bills a couple of years later. I consider it a blessing that I get to wake up every day and do what I love. Namaste and Crochet is a celebration or beauty diversity, ethical fashion, and living in the moment.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My answer to this question maybe isn’t the typical Los Angeles experience. I am a 4th generation Angelino. My family on both sides has been here for generations and my roots are deep. My favorite things to do in LA are hanging out with my huge family, enjoy the beautiful nature surrounding the city and making art. I am constantly bringing people to beautiful locations for photoshoots, going to the fashion district to look at fabrics, and pulling friends into jam sessions with my very musical community. My life is surrounded by art and I would hope to pull someone into that world.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My brand focuses a lot on sisterhood and women empowerment. I am so passionate about this because of the amazingly strong and gifted women in my life. My sisters, my best friends, and my mother are all women who inspire me daily and I owe much of my success to them.
