We had the good fortune of connecting with Donnell “DistantStarr” Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Donnell “DistantStarr”, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in NYC. Spent a lot of time in a few boros mainly Queens. I come from a pretty humble upbringing. Single mom in the hood. Because of this I had to pay for my own college. I started working very early around 15. This taught me to work hard for everything I have. To this day I work a full time job and do music once I clock out. Work ethic is key and consistency. It’s the very familiar kid from the hood working for a normal life. I now have 3 kids a beautiful wife and my own home. It took a lot of work to get here and this is something my parents never had. Give thanks everyday.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I create music under the name DistantStarr. I mainly rap and produce electronic hip hop music. I have been doing this professionally since 2008 starting with the group project “MAGr – No News Is Good News”. What sets me apart is work ethic. My discography includes more than 40 albums released worldwide and that’s not including features, all while working a full time job with 3 kids. It was never easy but worth every minute. I’ve learned a lot about patience as you need it dealing with the music industry. Also my job as an IT technician has helped this. I want every person in the world to know they can do ANYTHING if they work hard enough for it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live right outside of Philly and the first place we would have to go is Banana Leaf. Malaysian food at its finest. Great roti and soups too. Next we would have to hit Clean Juice for a nice orange/blue spirulina fresh press. Health is wealth. Mainly the trip would include food. Jamaican, Vegan whatever.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife Lexi aka 4storiesup. She deserves all the credit. Her and Jah.
