We had the good fortune of connecting with Doris (Yushu) Shen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Doris (Yushu), why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued an artistic and creative career because music and sound have been foundational in shaping both my personal journey and professional aspirations. From a young age, I found solace and direction in the beauty of music, which ultimately led me to study audio production. This field offered me not only a means of creative expression but also a platform to collaborate confidently and make impactful decisions.

As a member of the Beijing Philharmonic Choir when I was young, I’ve had the privilege of participating in prestigious international competitions, such as the Beijing Olympic Games’ Opening Ceremony and the Bartók International Choir Competition, where I garnered significant recognition. These experiences reinforced my passion for using sound to evoke emotions and tell compelling stories.

My education at USC Film Production further fueled my desire to explore the vast possibilities of audio production beyond traditional boundaries. I aim to apply my expertise to diverse fields like film, gaming, and beyond, leveraging my studio production skills to contribute artistically behind the scenes. For me, pursuing this path isn’t just about personal fulfillment; it’s about connecting with audiences on a global scale and continuing to grow as a storyteller in today’s dynamic world.

Despite the challenges I’ve faced as an international student, navigating cultural differences has enriched my perspective and deepened my commitment to creating meaningful auditory experiences. This journey has reinforced my belief in the power of sound to transcend barriers and resonate universally. In essence, my pursuit of an artistic and creative career stems from a profound belief in the transformative impact of sound and the endless possibilities it offers for expression and connection.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey in sound design and mixing has been defined by a passion for storytelling through auditory experiences. What sets me apart is my deep-seated belief in the power of sound to evoke emotions, convey narratives, and immerse audiences in transformative worlds. I take pride in my ability to blend technical proficiency with artistic sensitivity, creating soundscapes that resonate with authenticity and creativity.

Professionally, my path has been a culmination of dedicated pursuit and continuous learning. It hasn’t been without its challenges, particularly as an international student navigating cultural differences and striving to carve out a niche in competitive industries like film. However, these challenges have been catalysts for growth rather than deterrents.

Overcoming obstacles requires resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to learn from setbacks. I’ve embraced each challenge as an opportunity to refine my skills, expand my network, and deepen my understanding of sound’s role in storytelling. Support from mentors, including my mom’s unwavering encouragement, has been crucial in sustaining my motivation and guiding my professional development.

Key lessons along the way include the importance of collaboration, the value of continuous improvement, and the significance of authenticity in creative expression. Each project has taught me to listen attentively, both to the nuances of sound and the needs of collaborators, fostering richer, more meaningful outcomes.

What I want the world to know about my work and story is my commitment to pushing creative boundaries and delivering exceptional auditory experiences. Whether crafting immersive mixing for films, designing sound effects, or exploring innovative avenues in audio production, my goal is to transport audiences and elevate storytelling through sound. My journey is a testament to the transformative power of passion, perseverance, and the belief that every sound has the potential to resonate deeply with audiences worldwide.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d like to start in Hollywood with a stroll along the Walk of Fame and a visit to the TCL Chinese Theatre. We’d catch a classic film screening there before heading to Santa Monica for a relaxing beach day, exploring the pier, and enjoying dinner with a sunset view. The following day, we’d delve into arts and culture with visits to The Getty Center and LACMA, followed by an evening dining in the vibrant Arts District. A day trip to Malibu for beachfront dining and winery visits would be next, followed by a day exploring Downtown LA’s museums and historic landmarks. Culinary adventures would take us through Koreatown and Little Tokyo, complemented by visits to Griffith Observatory and dinner at a renowned restaurant. Our final day would be spent relaxing with brunch in Venice Beach and spa time, ending with a farewell dinner in Beverly Hills.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my mom, whose unwavering support, advice, and nurturing care have been instrumental in shaping my journey in sound design and mixing. Her encouragement from the early days of my fascination with music provided me with the confidence to pursue a creative career path.

Beyond my mom, I also owe a debt of gratitude to my mentors who have imparted their knowledge and inspired me to explore the depths not only in sound expertise but also the working ethics and, most importantly, the respectfulness and never-ending learning to the knowledge.

Lastly, I am thankful to the USC community for providing me with a stimulating environment to learn and grow. The opportunities and resources offered by USC have broadened my horizons and fueled my ambition to expand my creative pursuits beyond traditional boundaries.
