We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Lisa Folden and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Lisa, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Success is a nuanced topic for me. On one hand, success can be measured by income, wealth or financial standing. I certainly have specific markers that I look for to achieve success. However, I also have an understanding of success that exists without a focus on income or money at all. That understanding revolves my overall satisfaction with what I do and how I help others. Both aspects hold equal weight, but I must say that I have more joy and peace when I focus on the latter.
Being able to sleep well because I have done what is within my power to help someone else is very important to me. Additionally, having an ideal work-life balance where I am able to work the hours that make sense for my lifestyle, family and preferences while still being flexible, is key to my personal success.
Therefore, I suppose I’d have to say the most important factor behind my success and the success of my brand is the ability to do what I love, when I want and maintain a flexible lifestyle so that I am able to meet my personal needs and that of my family without negatively impacting my business. I credit my faith in God for this ability, along with a supportive husband and family, amazing clients and of course, my own hard work and diligence.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am the owner of Healthy Phit Physical Therapy & Wellness Consultants in Charlotte, NC. My business has existed for nine years and focuses on evaluating and treating clients with varying injuries, aches, pains and congenital conditions. Through thorough assessments, guided exercises, manual techniques, modalities and patient education, I help my clients achieve physical goals and return to optimal functional independence.
In addition to providing physical therapy, I utilize my NASM certification as a Behavior Change Specialist to provide health coaching (virtual) to busy moms who want to establish a more healthy lifestyle. What sets my practice apart is that I operate under an anti-diet, weight accepting and HAES-aligned practice model. This means that I focus on healthy behaviors rather than weight and body size. My clients find me because they are often tired of the weight stigma associated with living in larger (or just not thin) bodies and they want to explore a different, more positive and holistic approach to fitness/health/wellness.
The road to success in private practice is full of obstacles and challenges. As a Black woman without seed money or private funding, building this business has been a labor of love and true sacrifice. I recall the first six months in business, I did not make a dime because I could not figure out how to bill insurance companies, Some trial and error later and finally hiring a billing specialist made the difference for me.
COVID added a new level of challenge, but gratefully, I have maintained my standing and continue to provide services to my community and beyond. Grateful is an understatement and I’ve learned so much about myself and about business as a whole along the way. First, I learned how insurance companies operate…that was quite enlightening. Then, I learned that I could not do everything on my own. The power of delegation and outsourcing is key in running a thriving business.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Charlotte, NC and I love it here. I have visitors often and there are several places I like to take them. One great place in Camp North End. I love taking photos here and supporting several of the small businesses. I also enjoy taking in some nature at places like Freedom Park. I’m a people watcher so during the warm months, it’s a great option for that.
For my friends who love to shop I love taking them to Southpark Mall, if they have expensive taste or if they’re more like me and want a deal…Concord Mills Mall is another great option.
For food, I love to do brunch…so I always recommend, Bistro La Bon, Snooze, Ruby Sunshine or Flying Biscuit. And for nightlife. I love taking visitors to one of our gorgeous rooftop bars, like Merchant & Trade, Restoration Hardware and Cloud Bar.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to credit my aunt, Kim Alexander (who was more like a second mother to me), for instilling a sense of hope and pride in me at a very young age. Growing up in a lower socioeconomic situation as the oldest of six children to a single mother, my aunt never allowed me to limit myself. She worked with me at a very young age, which helped me to excel in school and she reminded me regularly that there were no limits with regard to my dreams, hopes and aspirations for my future and career. Therefore, my shoutout goes to her for always believing in me, teaching me to believe in myself and being an ever-present mentor, cheerleader and confidant in my life.
