We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Pooch and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Pooch, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
Selling my books out of the trunk of my car primarily throughout South Central Los Angeles I used many sales tactics. I had to be witty, spontaneous, engaging as well as fun and educational. I would make sales on the spot throughout barbershops, nail salons and local businesses. I would hold up my children’s book series and say: “I’m Dr. Pooch, the new Dr. Seuss!” and be able to captivate people’s attention and ultimately make that sale! People would give me cash, credit cards or send money through apps for 1 or most times all 5 books I was offering at that time for $35. I would regularly make 100’s of dollars in my community just by selling my product and making connections for a couple hours. Becoming the “new Dr. Seuss” is proving itself to be a very timely affirmation. Health-literacy is now equally if not more important than just being literate. We are sick as a nation, rather a world because of our lack of holistic health knowledge and refusal to live in accordance with nature. What if in one generation we could teach children to be more health-literate in fundamental holistic health concepts? What if these children can be the catalyst of inspiration for their parents and teachers to value holistic health in all things we do? What type of world would that be? A generation of health conscious kids and adults! Then imagine, those kids who become the adults who create even more sustainability and harmony within Self and Nature! Dr. Seuss has gotten a lot of negative press as of lately due to certain books having racist images or undertones. 6 of his books will cease to be published. The Seuss as we adults once knew of, is no more. That empire is falling and he is no longer here to defend himself or create more content. There’s a need for culturally sensitive and inclusive children’s literature. Dr. Pooch is the solution. Dr. Pooch’s Get Well Johnny 12 part book series brings fun educational health-literacy to children K-3rd grade! These books motivate young children to think about health within how they eat, how they live and what they do in the world! This book series has to be part of every child’s childhood just as Green eggs and Ham was. Except, Dr. Pooch doesn’t endorse green eggs nor ham, he says:” Superfoods are super fun, they’re super good for everyone”. By the end of my career I’ll have pioneered and popularized holistic health genres in children and adult literature, music and video content. Holistic Edutainment!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It all started with hip hop for me. It’s still an integral part of my life. But being into holistic health and dedicating myself to children’s edification, I’m concerned how music is influencing youth in the wrong way. So, I choose to make music that’s aligned with my health mission. My project F.D.A (Food is Dope in America) Vol. 1 is a conversational body of work that promotes the ideas i discuss in my books about holistic health. But i put the Hip Hop twist to it! My goal is to make health the new cool. They made being a drug dealer cool, now being drugged out is cool, i want the polar opposite to be cool. Health is Wealth type of message. Of course it’s not always easy going against the grain. But as a health coach, I just swap out the grains for seeds and plant these ideas into the culture. They’ll grow strong through time. To change detrimental cultural practices takes time, effort, and a whole lot of entertainment. So as i grow, i keep coming up with cooler ways to make health the new cool. I can’t wait to release Vol. 2 of F.D.A… It’s coming soon!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If your coming to my neighborhood we have to visit the local spots. Let’s go down the street on Slauson Ave to Simply Wholesome where you can buy my books (lol, shameless plug) and some good food. Let’s shoot down the street and pay respect to our local legend King Nip Hussle. Then from there we could check out leimert park and vibe off Crenshaw… Ok we did the city stuff now let’s unplug and hit Kenneth Hahn park trails, let’s go to the beach or the coast. And if you really want to see Cali’s beauty, let’s go up the PCH for scenic ride! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this to Cuzzin’ Dave Rodriguez who was the main illustrator of the book series. He unfortunately passed away of cancer during the creation of this series. His pencil sketches were used to develop books 7-12. This was the last project he worked on. Unbeknownst to me, Dave drew himself as one of the characters that regained his health in book 5: “Allergy Season”. So, it was as if i did contribute to his healing even though in real life I wasn’t awarded that opportunity
