We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Shané P. Teran and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Shané P., we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

Well I actually began to think about starting my own business very early on in my career. As life would have it, I was an African American female seeking higher education in a system that had plenty of roadblocks and people primed to see me fail. While I did not grow up experiencing discrimination, it was in my first undergraduate English class that a white male professor told me that I was a “pseudo intellectual” as the reason he refused to read any of my assignments. Fast forward to my doctoral program, and without provocation, I was told by a white female professor that I was not “doctoral material”.

From one challenge and negative influence to another, I knew that my skin color and/or gender was going to be a touchy area of concern for some people, so I forged full speed ahead into my career in mental health and was determined not to let anything or anyone get in my way. Based on my experiences, I decided to transition into the work that seemed most aligned with my values, vision and purpose in life. I built my own LA-based consulting firm to focus on companies invested in my mission of bringing visions to life. We aim to establish healthy organizational cultures, holistic-based leadership development efforts while enhancing the employee experience. I’ve heard and believe that employees are the greatest asset of our United States workforce…so why not ensure they have the best to do and be the best?!

What should our readers know about your business?

SP Consulting Group (SPCG) is a Black-owned Executive Wellness and Organizational Development firm that serves businesses and independent professionals in need of transformation, balance, and sustainable service impact. We believe that what sets SPCG apart from others in the industry is quite frankly the acknowledgement that managers and leaders throughout all industries struggle with mental health issues and do not know it all – we know they need help too. Therefore, instead of only focusing on business acumen and professional development, we include the necessary coaching and consulting needed to help leaders gain insight to their role and how it may connect with their purpose and vision for work-life balance/integration.

SPCG takes mental wellness support, empowerment as well as business strategy and transformation to curate a comprehensive program to assist each company and leader with taking business and leadership skills to the next level. If upon consultation we believe we are not a good match, we do not move forward. We are in this to see results and not contribute to the “check-box” mentality that some may have gotten used to. We want to see people and businesses win like never before, and without so much stress and chaos. So, if anyone is interested in working with us…be prepared to do the work and aim for lasting change vs. a quick fix. At SPCG, we believe that people’s health and organizational health go hand-in-hand, so we operate as such.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely want to hang out at the beach, e.g., Huntington Beach and have a small picnic near the ocean. Being near a large body of water has always been a great way for me to reset. And given they would be coming from a long plane ride, they would definitely appreciate the reset and recharge before a nice large bowl of Phö – one of my favorites! Then, assuming they were able to sleep during that flight, I would start planning our tour around the city for all the amazing local eateries and food trucks. Many of my friends know that I am a homebody, so they would know to come with their list of places they would like to visit since I have my few favorites and am good to go. I would also consider going on a scavenger hunt to see what we can get into, especially since things are beginning to open up here in LA!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to give a shout out to my parents, Rachel & Mark Givens for teaching me to use my faith in God to lead as a servant to others, be driven by love and integrity, and to always stand up for what is right and true. As I have recently lost my father to the COVID-19 virus, I would also like to dedicate this post to him – for instilling such a fiery passion for personal growth, lifelong learning, and tenacity in me. My mother has always and remains by my side to pour out more love and grace than I can ever explain. While “Deadie” was there to hold a hard line (that I used to loathe); ensuring that I understood that there is only so far you can go with your words. It is with purposeful action that an imprint may be left on the world. I love and miss him dearly.
