We had the good fortune of connecting with Drew Suppa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Drew, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I’m a strange one to ask about risk taking. Some people would look at me — or hear some of the outlandish stories from my work and travels — and think I steam full-speed ahead into anything I want. But the reality is: I take calculated risks. Perhaps that’s because I’ve brushed up alongside death, or that I’ve injured myself pretty severely along the way. But I make defined choices in both my personal and professional life. I fully embrace the fact that everyone else is just kind of making it up as they go, so I might as well lean confidently into the things I want out of life. We only have one go at this.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art stretches in several directions, but the medium that encapsulates everything I’m interested in is film. It’s been a long road from youthful dreams of getting paid to play with robotic dinosaurs to working on Academy Award and Emmy-winning content. I’ve learned this industry has two modes: instant recognition and the long haul. The former is a farce; some people get recognized for their efforts quickly, but the reality is they’ve spent countless hours honing in on their crafts on top of being talented.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a huge fan of the outdoors, the beautiful SoCal scenery and the eclectic culinary melting pot that is Los Angeles. I’ve dined in fine establishments across six continents at this point, and yet when I come home, I’m consistently amazed at the creations being concocted by local artisans mixing flavors amongst their neighbors. Stargazing at Vasquez Rocks, a jet ski run in Big Bear, hiking to Swetzer Falls, sushi at Roboto Ginya, Indian at Bollywood Cafe, Thai at Sanamluang Cafe, burgers at HiHo Cheeseburger, craft cocktails at the side room of The Roosevelt. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to thank some of my oldest friends in Los Angles — Alicia Robbins and David C. Smith. I wouldn’t have the basis of knowledge I do or the opportunities I’ve had if not for them both.
