We had the good fortune of connecting with Dwayne “Deascent” Gittens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dwayne “Deascent”, how do you think about risk?
I think about risk as a way of challenging myself and escaping my comfort zone. Its role in my career has led to so many amazing experiences. and accomplishments. I’m a very pragmatic person, but some of my biggest wins in my career and in life are a result of throwing caution to the wind and following my gut when an opportunity felt right.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what separates my art from others is that it’s driven by my love for information, passion for having thought-provoking yet entertaining conversations, and desire to create things that are bigger than me. I’m most proud of the fact that this is something that people thought I was a natural at before I even knew what I was doing. I always felt like since I didn’t go the conventional route of going to school and getting a degree in my field that I wasn’t good enough. Fortunately, many of the people in the industry have given me amazing feedback and encouragement to keep going. The work wasn’t easy in the least bit, There were days where I was sick and still had to conduct interviews or things would go haywire at the last minute and I would have to think on my feet in order to pull it off. Despite the various challenges, I managed to get the job done because of my commitment to my craft. I’ve learned that consistency and communication go a long way and that if you remain dedicated to your love for what you’re doing then the opportunities will be endless. I want the world to see me as someone who is always giving his best not to make myself look great, but because I genuinely love what it is that I do. I feel like I was created to create.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friend was visiting I would take them to Magnolia’s Bakery in the city and get some banana pudding. It is some of the best in the world, and it’s a symbol of my undying love if I take you there or let you have some of mine,

I’m a lifelong New Yorker so I try to avoid the touristy stuff, but if they want to go to Times Square or Central Park we could do that. We would probably eat at a local business with really good food and if I was still making music full time hit a local show where either I or some of my friends would be performing. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to my 12th grade English & Media teacher Mr. John DiPalermo. He inspired me in a myriad of ways. He was one of the people who encourage me to pursue my dreams as a musician which led me to become a writer and on-air personality.

He also taught me that there was a space for what I thought at the time was useless pop culture trivia, Taking his class was an early introduction into the world of entertainment and how everything isn’t always as it seems.
