We had the good fortune of connecting with Eboni Franklin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eboni, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
First I’d say punctuality. One chef told me “if you’re on time, you’re late.” . I’m usually the first one in the kitchen and I like that. Its quiet and peaceful-the calm before the storm.
Second, organization. You need to know that you have, what you need to do, how long it’d gonna take to get done, what you need for tomorrow and the busy weekend and the list goes on and on but, if you stay organized you will be fine. It will help you stay ahead of the chaos.
Third, curiosity. I have always been nosy and inquisitive. I ask why a million times a day. I am certain I used to annoy my chefs, but asking questions is how you learn.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
So, the name of the company I started is called CaNubis, it is a cannabis catering company. We have infused prepackaged goods such as drinks, savory snacks, condiments, confections, candy, jams, butters etc. We also provide personal chef services with infused food as well. I think what sets us apart from others is the infused aspect of the catering services and also. The idea came to me a few years ago when I stopped smoking to detox my lungs but still wanted the benefits (pain relief and help sleeping). I started experimenting with teas and different carrier agents and developed the first few drink flavors. I then had the idea to see if I could make other foods and started working on the bbq sauce and savory jams and different flavored butters. I went to the supermarket and made a list of all the prepackaged things I thought I could make, infuse and package myself. Then I started to offer in home fine dining services. Basically I craft customized fine dining infused dinners and bring that experience to your door.

It was easy to come up with the idea however it was very hard to find a way to promote myself. That has never been my strong suit. I have always been the creative type, I just want to keep making fun new things. The way I have learned to work through that is perseverance. Just keep going, keep making videos and posting them. Keep telling people about what you do. Be your own biggest cheerleader. I always have a pocket full of business cards, constantly handing them to people everywhere I go.

I’ve learned so many things in my 15 years in the kitchen. Accountability, dedication, hard work, pride, how to deal with challenges, time management and so many other things. But i suppose the most valuable thing i have learned is that I shouldn’t be afraid to fail and if I do fail, that there is no need to dwell on it. I can’t even count how many times I have messed up a recipe and had to throw it out and start over but that’s totally ok. Learn from your mistakes, that’s how we grow.

What I want you to know about me after reading this article is that I am no different than anyone else who has had a dream and a passion. I have survived many obstacles some of which I created myself but I didn’t give up and I won’t give up. One of my dreams is to have a cooking show to teach people about food and food wellness and another is to open a cannabis infused fine dining restaurant. Both of those will be my reality one day. Patience and perseverance, patience and perseverance.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love the water and it’s so hot here so I would probably suggest a pool party somewhere. I am also big on self care so I do go get a lot of massages and pedicures as well. I avoid the strip at all costs when hanging out so If I did want that kind of vibe for them, I would take them to Fremont, the Arts District, The Fruit Loop or The Container Park.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Great Aunt Tane who taught me how to cook. All the line cooks and chefs who taught me everything I know now. All my friends and family who encouraged me when I wanted to quit or when I had a bad day. Myself for getting up everyday and doing all the things I thought I couldn’t.
