We had the good fortune of connecting with Eddie Leroy Cunningham jr. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eddie Leroy, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I was born this way is my first answer. Painting and music has always been in my life and in my heart I can’t imagine not having those creative outlets. I have done so much with my music and art but, there is still so much to do. I’m always searching for the perfect idea for my next song. I wanna write the most cleaver, beautiful love song, the latest rage feel good song, the most killer rocker with a positive healing message and just nail it when I record it then put it out myself or pitch it to a big recording star or new up and coming artist. I guess like every other songwriter on the planet. LOL In my art world I Wanna create a masterpiece series that will find its place in the art history books someday, something with a abstract vibration of expressionism some great statement stuff and offer it up to the world. I have over 2000 songs in my BMI catalog and over 2000 paintings and drawings spanning over 30 years just ready for the world. Recently I have been working on a tribute song for The late Ruth Bader Ginsburg “NORTORIOUS RBG” I write what I feel and that impacted my emotions and stirred me a creative pain I wanted to express and show my respect for her and all she has accomplished in her lifetime I will post my heartfelt reaction to her passing and record this song for my new record. I will also paint a canvas in her memory.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When ever someone has been honing there craft for 40 years or so you get to see your style evolve and see the influences and unique identity you see whats happening with your art and what sets it apart is the seasoned artistic ability that only comes from time. When I see art from new artists in college claiming to be a abstract artist just by throwing paint on a canvas and smearing it around like pollack or De Kooning I can see right through that. stuff. my art these days has come full circle from my roots growing up in La Puente, Ca. my new series is Urban Expression and my latest series is called MASK.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Well, GOD above all gives me these talents to perform my creations of music and song and visual abstractions of paintings and such. My inspiration is put forth by my learnings from teachers and mentors much too many to mention. but, I need to say my relationship with The late Chris Darrow has been a strong part of who I become as a songwriter as I have written over 50 songs with him and a CD and one on the way. In many ways in my musical journey I’ve learned so much from The late Dennis Knutson on how to write a country song along with The late A. L. “Doodle” Owens both country hall of fame writers with many hit songs. I have written with so many great writers and learned something from all of them. In my Art besides all the great masters I was inspired by art teachers Marj Hyde (a student of Hans Hoffman, the Father of Abstract Art) I graduated highest in my class with her and Harry Lum (a student of Robert Motherwell) both were a big impact on my natural art abilities and brought forth and a whole new world of artistic ideas. lately I’ve been taken by the passing of the late “Nortorious” R.B.G. and I am currently working on a new project inspired by her.
