We had the good fortune of connecting with Elio Chen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Elio, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
One thing about the graphic design industry that outsiders are probably unaware of is its profound ability to address and solve social issues. Graphic design isn’t just about creating visually appealing products to stimulate consumer desire or solving a particular social problem. It also holds the power to alleviate growing psychological anxieties among people.

For instance, my thesis project leveraged graphic design as a tool to introduce and use the I Ching (a traditional Chinese divination method) to provide specific answers and relieve anxiety. By integrating modern graphic design principles with this ancient practice, I was able to create a unique system that helps individuals find clarity and reduce stress. This project exemplifies how graphic design can extend beyond commercial purposes to offer meaningful solutions to deeply rooted emotional and psychological challenges.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art and design work are deeply rooted in the intersection of traditional wisdom and modern technology. What sets my work apart from others is my unique approach to integrating ancient Chinese philosophies, particularly Taoism and the I Ching, with contemporary graphic design and creative coding. This blend creates a distinctive narrative that not only visually engages audiences but also provides them with meaningful experiences and insights.

One of the projects I am most proud of is my thesis, which involved developing a fortune-telling system using graphic design and AI training. This project was not just about creating aesthetically pleasing visuals but about offering users a tool to reduce anxiety and gain clarity through the ancient practice of I Ching divination. My journey to where I am today professionally has been filled with both achievements and challenges. It certainly wasn’t easy. Moving to the United States as an international student, I had to adapt to a new culture and educational system while striving to excel in my studies and projects. One of the significant challenges was learning creative coding from scratch during my graduate studies. However, my passion for continuous learning and the support from my mentors helped me overcome these obstacles.

Through this journey, I have learned several valuable lessons. Firstly, resilience and perseverance are crucial in the face of challenges. Secondly, collaboration and seeking feedback are vital for growth and improvement. Lastly, staying true to one’s unique vision and narrative can set you apart in a competitive field.

What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that design is not just about aesthetics; it is a powerful tool for addressing social and psychological issues. My work aims to bridge the gap between traditional wisdom and modern technology, offering innovative solutions that enhance well-being and foster deeper connections. I am passionate about using my skills to make a positive impact and continually exploring new ways to integrate creativity with purpose.

Thank you for the opportunity to share my story. I am excited about the future and the potential to contribute meaningfully to the world of design.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting the area, I would plan an unforgettable week-long road trip filled with adventure, exploration, and meaningful experiences. This road trip is something I’ve always dreamed of doing, and it would be the perfect way to show them the best time ever.

We would start our journey with a scenic drive along the Pacific Coast Highway, enjoying the breathtaking views of the ocean. Our first stop would be at the Channel Islands, where we could hike the rugged trails and immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the islands. We would camp overnight, engage in heartfelt conversations under the vast night sky, and stargaze, appreciating the tranquility and wonder of the universe.

Next, we would head inland to explore the rich folk culture of small towns and villages. We would visit local markets, try regional delicacies, and learn about the traditions and stories of the people. The charm and hospitality of these communities would provide a refreshing contrast to the hustle and bustle of city life.

Throughout our trip, we would make it a point to climb some of the iconic mountains and hills in the area. The physical challenge and the rewarding views from the top would be both invigorating and inspiring. We’d share moments of triumph and reflection as we conquered each peak together.

For dining, we would indulge in a mix of gourmet and casual eateries, savoring the diverse culinary offerings of the region. From fresh seafood by the coast to hearty farm-to-table meals inland, our taste buds would be on a delightful journey of their own. We’d also enjoy local wines and craft beers, toasting to our friendship and the memories we’re creating.

Evenings would be spent around campfires or in cozy lodges, where we could continue our deep conversations and connect on a more profound level. These nights of storytelling and laughter would be some of the most cherished moments of our trip.

Overall, this road trip would be a blend of adventure, cultural immersion, and personal connection. It would be a week of discovery, both of the beautiful landscapes and of each other’s thoughts and dreams. I can’t think of a better way to spend time with my best friend, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My journey and success in the graphic design field have been significantly shaped by the support and encouragement of several key individuals and groups. First and foremost, I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my professors at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) and ArtCenter College of Design (ACCD). Their mentorship and guidance were instrumental in shaping my design skills and creative thinking.

I also owe a great deal of my success to my family and friends who have been my unwavering pillars of support. Their belief in my abilities and constant encouragement have given me the confidence to pursue my passion and strive for excellence in my work.

Additionally, I want to recognize the influence of my colleagues and clients, particularly those at Cast Partner and other companies I have worked with. Collaborating with such talented individuals has not only refined my skills but also broadened my perspective on design and its impact.

A special mention goes to the Taoist philosophies and the I Ching, which inspired my thesis project. This ancient wisdom provided a unique lens through which I could explore and integrate graphic design to create meaningful solutions for psychological well-being.

Lastly, I am grateful for the design community as a whole. The continuous exchange of ideas, inspiration, and innovation within this community has been a driving force behind my growth and motivation.

To everyone who has been a part of my journey, thank you for your invaluable contributions and for believing in my potential. Your support has been the cornerstone of my achievements.
