We had the good fortune of connecting with Elizabeth Parris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elizabeth, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Medicine to Mortgages came from my life journey. As a child when you asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I knew it was a doctor. I focused my time and energy well over a decade to get the grades, take and pass the entry exam to get into medical school. However, I failed an exam while there and was dismissed dismissed from medical school. This was a devastating event for me, as I dedicated so much of my time and sacrificed so much to get to that point of my career journey. With so much invested in the journey of becoming a doctor, it felt like I was grieving the loss of a family member. It was a journey of letting go of what I thought I would be and embracing the new path I was on. While I was figuring out my next steps, I was introduced to the mortgage industry. I was a trained at mortgage company and became licensed originate home loans. As I continued to grow in the industry and manage the changes with this growth, I came up the the brand name Medicine to Mortgages for a podcast, which translated to a brand name all together. It is a double entendre a well. It represents my journey but it also notes that I can be the cure to your mortgage problem.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My journey in to the mortgage industry was not traditional by any means. It came from a career pivot and has been an incredible experience. My growth as a loan originator and a brand stems from being unafraid to speak to anyone in a room about who I am or what I do. When i first started in this career just about 9 years ago, it was easy finding supports, mentors or teachers. I honestly had to learn a lot by seeking out information and putting the hours. in order for me to grow and learn from my mistakes I search for mentorship. I also learned to the names of the staff who were responsible for approving my files and learned to ask them questions upfront. I became a student of my craft and I still am. Major lesson i learned, 1. some of the greatest supports in your career will not be your management or superiors, but the people who work along side you to see a goal through. 2. Networking is the best way to find a mentor as well as business. 3. Learn to delegate early. 4. Failure is often the thing you need to tap in to your full potential. 5. its ok to change your goals you don’t have to stay stuck any where that no longer aligns with your purpose.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
LA is one of my favorite cities. I am out there often for business and fun very often. i am vegan so i am always going to find a few places to eat like Crossroads , Shojin or Pure Vita. I also enjoy a good cocktail and rooftop, so i absolutely have to go to perch, catch LA, or Level 8. I really love art and music, When i come to town i always check out the arts district, lives shows and a few dance classes if i have time.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
