We had the good fortune of connecting with Ellien Landy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ellien, what are you inspired by?
WHO : funny, unique and intelligent people.
WHAT : art, cuisine, quality time with friends, martini’s, music and dancing.
WHERE : Montana, Mexico, Utah, New York, France, Italy, Bhutan and beyond . . .
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
This industry is all about relationships. I am a professional who has made a point of connecting to each and every hotelier, resort manager, travel expert, cruise director and tour operator and beyond that strikes my discerning sensibilities … just ask to see my rolodex collection of business cards [ yes … google ‘rolodex’ ]
People would say to me often … “when I grow up I want to be you.”
I love love love my job and I have great connections and a stellar reputation with my colleagues and peers. This career has enriched my life in so many ways from relationships to destinations that a photo catalog can never due my journey justice.
So I must be doing something right.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Los Angeles is very special to me with many hidden gems and amazing neighborhoods of history and sublime elegance. There are countless visits to be had in :
Pasadena | DtLA | West Hollywood | Beverly Hills | Century City | Santa Monica | Brentwood | Pacific Palisades | Malibu
Geoffrey’s, Nobu, Cross Creek | Malibu
Bel Air Hotel | Bel Air
The Beverly Hills Hotel, The Maybourne, The Peninsula, The Rooftop of The Waldorf Astoria, Rodeo Drive, Spago | Beverly Hills
Eataly, Javier’s | Century City
Wine House Kitchen | West Los Angeles
The Proper, La Puglia | Santa Monica
Farm Shop | Brentwood
Malama Pono | Studio City
. . . and of course, my home.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I thank my divorce that endeavored my career. 50 years ago. I had three choices, travel, real estate or interior design. I figured the most fun would be travel … and I was right.
My ex-husband – yet a very dear friend to date, bequeathed this advice to me [ at Geoffrey’s in Malibu ] “The only way you will ever make a good living or make a lot of money depending on how you want to look at it, or to become successful financially is if you either own your business, or are an independent contractor.” So a shoutout to Michael Landy … for gifting me the seed of LANDY.travel.
My tenacious hardworking nature led me on a path to meet Alexandre Chemla … founder of Altour Travel in 1996. And here we are at this interview … 27 years later … an independent contractor … in a beautiful glass modern appointed office, the sun shining … and I am smiling – it feels like yesterday.
