We had the good fortune of connecting with Elly Hanssen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elly, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
Doing what i love regardless of opportunity.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a singer dancer choreographer songwriter. I have founded 3 performing arts studios in New Zealand and Australia. My husband & I and 2 children moved to LA july 2019 to create a safe space for creatives to have community and support. We provide hiphop dance classes in DTLA and create shows to collaborate and network with other artists. Growing up in Sydney australia with a single Mum of 6 we had to work really hard to get through school. I moved to Atlanta Georgia after college to pursue music and dance. It was lonely journey but within the 5 years i lived there i met incredible people and had the opportunity to be in a girl group called “pretty toni” with Keri Hilson and also worked as a back up dancers for many artist. Mase and Lloyd being some of the most popular at the time.
I have learned that my worth is not wrapped up in how good i am doing in my craft. I have learned that people dont care about how much you know until they know how much you care. Consistency is key. Repetition is the mother of skill. Never give up.
Swarm LA provides hiphop dance classes for all ages. We love people and believe that you and your art form can bring hope, light and expression to humanity.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to my Mum who worked 3 jobs to put me through music & dance school. Shoutout to my Husband who has always championed artists to live out their passions and cheered me on every step of the way.
