We had the good fortune of connecting with Elvira Zamora and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Elvira, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to create a brand of clothes that allow you to express yourself without having to say anything. The shirts can also be conversation starters. The other designs I create are unique upcycled clothes created for fashion shows and photo shoots. I love to express myself in fashion and creating my business has given me the tools and opportunity to always challenge myself.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is upcycle designs, which means they are earth friendly by using materials that were once in other garments or products. I am proud to not contribute to the ever growing landfill issue that is slowly taking over our beautiful planet. I am most proud that my brand took me all the way to Japan to sell at an event where people were interested and purchased from me. It was a very humbling moment to be able to showcase the culture here in LA in Japan. I got here, owning my business and studio by a lot of hard work, sleepless nights with all the physical and mental pain you can imagine. It is not easy to work a full time job and pursue your dreams at the same time, but it has to be done when you do not have any investors or business loans. I chose to go about making my dream come true without having to worry about paying anyone back or answering to anyone with how I move in my own company. It is a lot harder but for my sanity, I would do it the same again. My brand’s story is about self expression, the limitations that we put on ourselves. I came from a place where people do not make it. Poverty, language and other obstacles were there in front of me and somehow I had no fear in taking everything on and no matter how much it hurt some days, the end result was worth all the tears. I just want people to be inspired to go after their own dreams as well, not because it is easy but the journey will develop your character as every episode you encounter will test you to the limit.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my out of town friend to the arts district in downtown LA. I have visited other States and I have not been able to see anything as close to what we have here in Southern California. The diversity in downtown LA with the murals, food, people and different districts will be something that anyone with a sense of adventure and hunger to learn will appreciate and remember their trip forever. We can also hang out at the Getty Villa to get our museum fix and head down to the beach right below for a picturesque perfect day.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shoutout my family. They have been there for me since the beginning of my journey with fashion and never discouraged me from following my crazy dream. My father in particular was a huge inspiration because he was a tailor for over 50 years and became his own boss. I would love to one day just have my studio as my only form of income and never give up or have self doubt. We have to do whatever we can to make things a reality and he was and still is a huge living motivation that “si se puede”.
