We had the good fortune of connecting with Emiliano Mazzenga and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emiliano, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks has played and continues to play a fundamental role in my career and in my personal growth in general. For instance moving abroad in order to fulfil my dreams and reach my highest goals was a bold decision that is paying off so far. Of course nothing comes easily, but seeing the incredible outcomes of every risk I have taken, is good encouragement to jump into the next one. When I compose, I always try to keep in mind the importance of taking risks. Stepping out of my comfort zone and experimenting with new sounds and musical solutions often helps me discover new musical territories that I wouldn’t have explored without that mindset.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I write music for films and TV. I’ve always loved both music and cinema – this is the most fulfilling and exciting career I could have asked for. My journey as a composer was very gradual. I started out writing music for theater, then web series, shorts, and I’m now primarily composing for feature films and TV series. I’ve been lucky to work on many lovely movies with very compelling stories, and most importantly with directors that trusted and gave my music a lot of space and attention in their films. This led to 15 awards for Best Original Score (or Best Composer) at various international film festivals.
This career path can be at times daunting and can present numerous challenges. That’s why it is important not only to write some killer music, but also to possess a positive attitude, the ability to deal with stressful situations, and a genuine desire to grow and raise the bar each time.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of the coolest things about LA is that despite the season, you can always go and enjoy a day at the beach. I would definitely go to the colorful Venice, then Santa Monica and Malibu for sure! I love the sunsets in LA, such an amazing range of colors. To best enjoy the sunsets, I’d make sure to be at the beach or go for a hike during the evening. Regarding food, there are so many choices! You can find amazing authentic restaurants from so many parts of the world – I’d probably go with a Mexican one because they are just so great here in LA!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Countless people deserve recognition in my story. I’m incredibly grateful to all my mentors, fellow filmmakers, composers, musicians and friends that encouraged me and supported me during my journey. A big shoutout to all the directors that trusted me and my art, and continue to want my music to be a part of their beautiful movies and projects.
Last but not least, a special thank you to my incredibly supportive parents and family that consistently root for me from Italy.
