We had the good fortune of connecting with Emilie Battle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emilie, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Consistency. I was in the fitness industry for 6 years before deciding to launch my own business, however, from the beginning my outlook on health and fitness was very clear. I believed in lifestyle change as opposed to quick fixes, I believed in educating my clients about their bodies and cultivating a mind/body connection, I believed in erasing the mentality of restriction when it comes to food and instead learning how to eat the best versions of things, I believed in celebrating the strength of each individual that walks through the door to train with me, meeting them where they are, and building from there. I am now approaching nearly 10 years in the industry, and none of this has ever wavered. During my time in the fitness industry I worked at boutique gyms, large corporate gyms, I worked with kids, teens, seniors, performers, 9-5ers, new mothers, mothers to be, everyone…yet my mission and my outlook stayed the same. What I present on social media and in my sessions was always with the mission to inspire, uplift, educate and celebrate. When I launched Battle Body in 2019, people already knew what I stood for. When you sign up to workout with me, you know you’re signing up for a really exciting journey. Every day I watch my clients feel so empowered by what they discover about their bodies and their potential. I watch them liberate themselves from societal pressure and the toxic beauty standards that are so deeply engrained in us and celebrate themselves. When you feel empowered, you want to empower others so the word of mouth spreads, and the business grows in the best of ways!

What should our readers know about your business?
Battle Body is a Personal Training Service and Health and Wellness Brand. After nearly 10 years of working in large corporate gyms or boutique gyms, I realized what was really missing from both and that was a true focus on the client. A business is a business after all but I felt like there had to be a way to be successful on the business side while really investing in the progress of the client and maintaining integrity. Our motto at Battle Body is to “Celebrate Your Strength” this means the strength of every individual that signs up to work with us. The mission is to show clients that exercise is a celebration not a punishment, that every individual body is capable and that fitness is a journey. We pride ourselves on true diversity. Every Battle Body client is working out for their own individual reason. Our clients have all different body shapes and range in age from 20’s to 50s! We train pre/postnatal clients, clients recovering from injury, clients looking to build strength, clients looking to lose weight, clients looking to become more coordinated and active, you name it! I truly believe I got to where I am today business-wise through maintaining my integrity and having a high level of service. Each workout program is specifically tailored to each individual client, we are never one size fits all and we always meet the client where they are, build from there and celebrate each milestone. Gyms are a place where people so easily feel intimidated and lost, we strive to make you feel seen and celebrated. Growing a business is never easy. I find I’ve become a master at pivot-ing, the biggest pivot of course being when Covid hit! Now I find myself pivoting again as we go back to more of a normal life. But, I find the pivots exciting. Its empowering to really listen to your clients, listen to your gut and figure out the best way to adjust in this ever changing world. One major lesson I’ve learned is to make time for myself. Running a business really is all consuming, your mind is always going. I learned that a perk of being “the boss” is I have the power to make time for myself. So I am intentional about carving out time for myself to workout, ensuring I get two full days off a week, I cut myself off from work and emails at a certain time every day. As a result, while sometimes I feel tired, I never feel drained. I’m always able to properly show up for my clients and my team. I want the world to know that working out doesn’t have to be a punishment. The ability to move your body is an absolute gift. We have been generationally conditioned to think that fitness looks a certain way and is only for a certain body and Battle Body works to undo that mentality. Every day I watch clients do things with their bodies they never thought possible, I watch people feel empowered and confident and strong, I watch them find joy in movement. That’s the point of it all, to silence the negative voice and empower the positive one.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh man, well I’m a huge foodie so this would all be a mostly food related experience! For a beachy day we would definitely hit up Malibu Fish Market for some chowder in a bread bowl and fish and chips before heading across the street to the beach. We’d also hit up Sidewalk Cafe on Venice Beach for some lunch and people watching! For dinner, we’d head to Bestia for one of my favorite dining experiences in LA. I also love lounging at the pool at The Roosevelt Hotel. To me, that hotel is quintessential Old Hollywood and to lounge by the pool with a cocktail? Perfection! For a more touristy moment, I’d definitely go to Universal Studios. I love a theme park and Universal is so LA but also small enough that you’re not exhausted at the end of the day!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This is dedicated to my parents, who every challenging, exciting, ever changing step of the way have been nothing but supportive and celebratory. Thank you for constantly making me feel so strong, confident and competent. You are the roots Battle Body was built on.
