We had the good fortune of connecting with Emin Ahmetoglu & Kaya Newton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emin & Kaya, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
The ability to bring a plethora of different backgrounds together on the dance floor and making them forget about their reality by engulfing them in a musical journey. Seeing many people enjoy our music selection, especially seeing a good reception to the deeper cuts, is an amazing feeling. The feeling is enhanced even further when we play our unreleased tracks, since there is always the thought of “oh we wonder what kind of reaction it would get from this crowd?” That sweet feeling is truly worth pursuing and always challenges us to push each other further. We both love challenge and the challenge of rocking different crowds in different environments and being able to specifically adapt to each one of them is what makes us happy, it keeps our momentum going and definitely makes us feel more alive and accomplished.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We aim to bring the sounds we experienced in Turkey and in the mediterranean into our music, it consists of complex percussive elements with an electronic edge to it. The genre nowadays that all of these sounds fit under is simply called Afro-House. The term “Ethnic-House” is also used to describe the Middle-Eastern sounds incorporated within the House music genre. We describe our vibe as dynamic, jungle/tribal-themed with an urban touch to it. However, the bottom line is it all comes from an expressive state of mind, we play what we feel like would resonate with ourselves and the crowd, given the setting and themes of the parties.
We had many hardships throughout our relatively young careers, and it definitely cannot be considered easy. We overcame the many challenges of the entertainment industry thanks to trusting each and sticking together no matter what. We share what we feel like and how we can improve and strengthen each other both as artists and as friends. At the end of the day, we surrounded ourselves with the right people who challenged us and made sure we stayed true to ourselves. The bottom line is, stay true to your values, and know your “WHY?” and never forget to love what you’re doing.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would bring them to our parties, enough said.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We have numerous influences from different genres, it would take days for us to shoutout all of them. However, given that we are within the afro/latin/tech house realm within electronic dance music, we would like to thank and shoutout several artists: Hyenah, Nhii, Pablo Fierro, Tayllor, Zigan Aldi, and Floyd Lavine are all our personal friends as well as amazing artists that we look up to a lot. Other artists who’s specific sounds we admire are Black Coffee, MoBlack, Ameme, Sparrow & Barbossa, Band & Dos. Last but not least, some our close friends here in LA that we have the pleasure of working with all the time are Samson, Sauaro, Jon Milk, who are all very talented producers that are on the rise.
