We had the good fortune of connecting with Emmanuel Grunstein and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emmanuel, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
When you’re an aspirant of artist or an artist, as everything is uncertain, you’re always taking risks. Risks makes you stronger, makes you grow, also makes you fall and sometimes to think that nothing that you’ve worked on is relevant, important and makes you think about if is really worth it to continue, but then you take the risk to start over again, to try new things, get involved in new projects, meet new people and then you realize that every risk, every fall, every tear, is worth it. Risks are something important, and relevant, because is something that you’re doing for yourself, not for somebody else, speaking for myself I can say that thanks to the risks I’ve take in my life, it makes me the person that im today, more mature, more evolved, with a lot to learn yet and with a lot of risks still to take, but happy. Uncertainty is now part of my life, such as the loneliness or other feelings that most of the people has not work it on themselves, im always happy to try, to discover, to risk, it makes me feel really alive!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well, well. well… this is getting deeper and deeper, sweeter and sweeter ! And I love it! LOL

I really think that we all have our own uniqueness, the special factor that makes us create and develop our art in different ways. The important thing for me as an artist is the message, what moves you to create, what’s the intention, what do you want to communicate, what inspires you?
Im still learning everyday, playing, discovering, working on different themes, absorbing knowledge and experiences from others, creating with others, I can’t picture myself, my work, without the help of other artists that had helped me on all my projects, actors, models, make up artists, stylists, hair dressers, other photographers and filmmakers, and all of the crews that had worked with me and most important, had believed in me, so im where I am because all of this people. This is what im proud about, of all of the magnificent, the magic, the power that the union of creation with others can become.

I had the opportunity to work in a lot of different kind of projects, as a freelancer, working and creating for myself and also for others, from theater, cinema, music festivals, concerts, events, productions, tv, voice over, editing, design and of course photography, but if a have to me mention the one that introduced me to a whole new world and horizons, is an film festival that I became the producer, it gave the opportunity for myself to develop a lot of new skills and also to help others to develop theirs, to be a platform of creation and exhibition, to take risks, to make me realize that im love with ART!

And, no, the journey has not been easy at all, but it happens to most of the people that dedicates our lives to art.
But actually even tough is has not been easy, I won’t change any moment, any experience, any difficulty, any single person that has crossed in the way for the good or for the bad, because this is what it has take me where im today,

Im from México, I was living in a small town when I was teenager and started studying art (kinda forced by my mother) because at that moment I pictured myself in the future as a business man (I know, thankfully it didn’t happened!), she’s also an artist, the black sheep from a catholic family, so as her son, I have to live with her jeje even tough I wanted to be with my grandmother living “an stabilized life with all the conforts” (thankfully it didn’t happened either! LOL), so mostly all of my life were involved around bohemian people, hippies, marihuana and la la la! Coming and goin through all the country, with no money, living with the basics, but when you’re a child or teenager you don’t really understand a lot of things, you don’t have appreciation, so I kinda hated for years that environment, but then going the first day to the art school and see there were other kids of my age, start working with my professors, makes me see the beauty and potential of art!

Then i became independent at the age of 17th and went to Mexico City by my own and without the economic help of anyone of my family, following my dream of became an actor (that it happened), and where my brands started. Emmanuel Grunstein, Emmonkey Films and now Grunstein Photo & Cinema.

So with all this said and now that I’ve travelled around the globe (with still a lot to see) and now based on Spain, i really consider myself as a lucky one, because now that im an adult. and having appreciation of all this experiences behind me, makes me really stronger, helped me to take risks and not be afraid of challenges, to see beauty and something special where others doesn’t see it, to apply all the acquired knowledge into my projects, photography, film, video and else. And now im hungry of more! I want to share my vision, my craziness, my messages and also my culture, but the most important thing, to keep creating with other artists and do really special projects together!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ok! Its difficult to answer as in México and Spain there’s a loooot to see and discover! But here we go!

México City: Coyoacan, Xochimilco, Centro Historico, Garibaldi, Palacio de Bellas Artes, Castillo y bosque de Chapultepec, parque Mexico, theres a lot of beautiful museums,
Also a bit far from the city but a must, las pirámides de Teotihuacan, Hidalgo, Queretaro.

Eat… Mostly i don’t go to restaurants, I love the Places at the street, because they are delicious and hand made!! tacos, quesadillas, pambazos, sopes, and other amazing food with variety of salsas. But I have said before, I love to take risks! LOL

this questions are really difficult to answer as we are all different and with different tastes! But I will gladly do a personal advice. and recommendations if someone like to ask me, from México and also here in Spain, I know around the 90% of both countries

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Wow… there’s a lot of people that deserves not only a little credit or recognition in my story, the deserve a BIG one!!! I cannot realize myself without the help of others, thanks for every person that help me in every project that I have made, that believed in me, take the risk together to do something, to be crazy with me!

If I can name one of the most important persons that believed in me with blinded eyes and supported me unconditionally is Enrique Gallego López.

Then will be other people, friends, brothers and sisters, my chosen family who has made my path easier and put a lot of color in it!

Never will be grateful enough!
